It's a tough situation, but I think if anything society is to blame for judging someone based on claims only and without decision of the courts. You can not expect the police to ignore existing privacy laws because of it, but I'm sure this "investigation" is for show or a slap on the wrist at best. Oh and I doubt anyone could prevent people from spreading information about the accusations in the first place.
