Whew! Sorry, had real life things to worry about for a while so it took me time to get back to this. Anyway, your most recent response is essentially just a morass of unsupported claims with no evidence behind them, and personal opinions presented as incontrovertible facts. It goes on at great length, but is basically just repeating things you don’t, and presumably can’t, prove. This is a rhetorical tactic - you’re attempting to turn each post into an exhausting list of scattershot claims that w…

You appear to be conflating the annual rate of stalkings vs. the lifetime risk of being stalked. Yearly rate of stalking: 3.4m, ~2/3 women Lifetime risk of being stalked: 1 in 3 women.

Again, I am not “using statistics to discriminate.” I’m saying nothing about men as a group. I’m saying a) stalking is not that rare, and b) there is a specific behavior (staring at people in public) that legitimately makes women feel unsafe, because it demonstrates that the starer is willing to cross boundaries and ignore social norms; and many women have experienced situations like this escalating beyond mere staring. If someone posted a video of a woman engaging in the same behavior, it would…

So again you’re moving the goal posts here because you made an indefensible argument (being creeped out by being stared at is equivalent to being creeped out by a particular racial group). You new argument is that you’re not saying it’s unreasonable (“I didn’t claim the discomfort is unreasonable”), although you do think it IS unreasonable (“I do think it’s an overreaction, and an unhealthy one”), but you’re just concerned about the harm it’s causing to the guy in the video. To which I say, you’…

Nonsense. I’m not saying that men in general are dangerous. I’m saying that men that stare at women in public spaces make women uncomfortable, and that discomfort is not unreasonable.

Also, quite frankly, if it is so hard for men to understand what’s “over the line,” then this woman is doing a goddamn public service by posting this. Guys? That’s over the line! Don’t do that! Now you know.

First, I sincerely doubt he’s being socially shamed. He’s a pretty average-looking man whose head is never fully on-screen, and he’s old enough that I doubt most of his social circle is on TikTok or Reddit. Certainly I’ve seen no one offer any evidence that anything bad has happened to him as a result of this, so any harm seems at best hypothetical. On the other hand, there are many women that objectively have had unpleasant or violent encounters that began with staring like this. I don’t think …

Both my anecdotal evidence and the statistics demonstrate that stalking is frequent enough to be a real risk. Most women’s personal experience suggests that having a man single you out for behavior that violates social norms, like staring at your body protractedly, is a situation in which there is an increased risk of something bad happening. All of us have had a situation like that escalate at least to something like groping or shouting - not all of such instances, but enough of them to be frig…

I’m literally the only one on this thread that’s given evidence. If you want anyone to believe you, why don’t YOU give some? You think the federal government’s statistics are wrong? Fine. Cite some of your own and explain why their source is better than the people whose job it is to keep this kind of data.

1) you do realize that over the course of history we have experienced multiple years, right? And that over time, the result of having multiple years happen is that the individual events of each year aggregate into the overall number of lifetime events? 2) Neither of those are red-pill narratives, so I’m not sure how it would support red-pill narratives even if I were playing into victimizing women or demonizing men, which I am not. Most men are lovely. The minority that stare at women creepily a…

My dude. What is your evidence that men are not able to “even look at women anymore”? Because they can, and they do, and this video provides no evidence to the contrary. I get that there is a cottage industry of men out there that would like to make other men think they can get in huge trouble for so much as looking at a woman. But those men are lying, and it’s not women’s job to comfort men who have listened to lies told by other men.

I’m sorry. Did you just demand hard evidence and then get pissed when I asked you to do the same? That’s… well, about what I would expect given your argument, I guess.

Okay, I’m genuinely curious - what do you think I’m saying that “actively legitimiz[es] the shit they say about women?”
/r/PurplePillDebate06/12/23 08:24 PM

Yes. Until and unless you can actually show some evidence that it had any negative impact on his life, then the only harm done would be his discomfort, which would only happen if he saw it.

I gave evidence that between one and two out of every hundred women are stalked in a given year. Firstly, for a frightening event that can and does sometimes end in violence, that’s not very rare. Second, you do realize that it doesn’t just reset every year, right? When you pile up year after year, you end up with a world where one in three women get stalked at some point. And that’s just women who get stalked; it doesn’t count things like the women who get grabbed and felt up, or the women who …

Well, first off, yes, I do think at least some of those men are being disingenuous. I think there are men on that thread that know they’re making women uncomfortable, but want plausible deniability and a lack of consequences. I get there are subtle social interactions that are hard to learn the rules to, but “don’t let your eyes linger on a random woman’s body for longer than half a second, and don’t keep coming back over and over for brief looks at that woman’s body” isn’t actually particularly…

Well, if you were already staring at them, then continuing to stare at them will probably not communicate what you’re thinking. Maybe try politely asking them why they’re filming you.

You’re not wrong, but I don’t really get in these debates to convince the person I’m talking with. I get in them in the hopes I can help keep some innocent 15-year-old from disappearing into the redpill echo chamber. I

No. It’s that women don’t like guys that are going to be constantly in their face and incapable of acting like a mentally competent human being when there are breasts in the vicinity. It’s really not more complicated than that. Like, red pill types have made up this complicated story about how women actually like and want to be leered at and objectified, and yet even though they like and want it they feel compelled to engage in a weird game where they will only date men who don’t do the thing th…

You are the only one policing anything. You’re telling women how they’re allowed to react to being made uncomfortable by creeps. Everyone here is agreeing with you that men have the legal right to make women uncomfortable by staring at them. They are merely pointing out that women in turn have the legal right to film in a public place and post it to the internet. I’m sorry it makes you uncomfortable, but it really doesn’t matter how you feel about it. You don’t have a right to police anyone’s us…

This woman was not trying to incite, and has not resulted, mob violence. Again, this is a very weird and detailed fantasy you are having.

About 3.4 million people in the US are victims of stalking in a given year. More than two thirds of those are women. As a result, nearly 1 in 3 women in total have been the victim of stalking at some point. https://bjs.ojp.gov/content/pub/pdf/sv19.pdf https://www.stalkingawareness.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/SPARC_StalkngFactSheet_2018_FINAL.pdf I have personally been stalked. I have friends who have been stalked. It’s not rare.

I’m not saying it has never happened. I’m saying wow, that was a weird and very detailed train of thought to go down just because an anonymous women posted a video of an anonymous man staring at her. None of those things are going to happen to that man. It’ll probably never intersect with his life; and if by chance someone who recognizes it does come across it, no one’s going to sexually assault him as a result. What a weird, weird place to go to.

The guy in the video was not just glancing. He was repeatedly looking down at the same woman’s body in a very distinct way. I do not think he thought he was just glancing at her.

I don’t feel like it takes much social IQ to realize that if a random stranger starts filming you, you have don’t something they don’t like. Everybody stares off into space now and then, but if someone in my line of sight pulled out a phone and started filming me, I’d immediately look away (and probably physically move away as well). Even more so if I’d actually been staring at them (though I’d never have done that on purpose in the first place). These kinds of films would never make it to the i…

Oh, I don’t think anyone thinks the men here are representative of the average guy. We just all have a quixotic need to occasionally come down and try to pull a few of them back into reality. :/

My dude, has it occurred to you that if it were indeed no big deal and much ado about nothing, then no one would be reacting to it? The fact that people are reacting means that it is a big deal to plenty of people. At best what you can say is that in your opinion it’s much ado about nothing, and that it’s no big deal to you, which is your right. But a lot of people disagree with you, and many of those people are women.

Yeah, if he wanted to not be filmed staring at people, he should have worn a veil so no one can see what his eyes are doing.

Yeah, I really want this guy to go around just staring at random men and see what happens.

Yes. Women do, in fact, prefer men who don’t act like everything women do has no other purpose than to get guys to stare at them; and are capable of doing something other than staring at women. Weird, isn’t it?
