Alimony stopped being deductible in 2022 I think, which was the implementation of the 2017 TCJA to divorces after 1/2019. Here in California the standard practice is the Child Support goes through garnishment, there may be ways to pay it monthly to the county but that is not standard. After all the battles it took two years to get it final. I didn’t pay monthly rent directly, they did a calculation at the end for what I owed the estate for “beneficial use of an asset” (the paid off house) and she got a line item of 30K against my side of the ledger which was half the “lost rent” minus taxes and fire insurance that I paid. Well child support hasn't been deductible for a long time, but up until a couple years ago, alimony was deductible by the payer and had to be claimed as income by the receiver. The payer is the party with more income. So consider now with the new laws, the payer has to pay taxes on the whole amount at a higher income tax bracket than if the alimony was deductible.
