You cannot negotiate genuine desire.

"I give up the hope of a different past by accepting my true past." This helped me in May 2018. I realised I was constantly trying to change my perceptions of the past and rationalize my decisions and behavior. Accepting it for truly what it was gave me freedom from my past so I could get out of trying to change it and move forward.

Never went back after that. The ex did the dumping for me and set me free. Really hurt at the time but I see how much of a gift that was. Still trying to fully reconcile my resentment.

Same with "domestic violence." Went to therapy after my ex cheated and shared that when she'd get upset about <insert any perceived grievance> I would counter and try to make her realize how silly it was. Clearly not respectful of her feelings. I could have been more sensitive, I truly believe that. This counselor told me our next session was going to be on domestic violence. Really? I'm violent because I didn't coddle and agree with her endless grievances? Okay, it's best to stay single. I trul…

I like to say I'm really good at minding my own business. I may lack situational awareness at times, but it sure is peaceful.

You cannot negotiate genuine desire, even using your Dad's emergency room visit. Even if she felt pity and contacted you, would you want it to be out of obligation? Putting expectations and demands on people only builds resentment on both sides. I know it hurts bad. I wish you strength to get through your heartbreak gracefully and hope your Dad recovers quickly.

Initial thoughts: You're codependent seeking external validation from her and internet strangers. This should be about your Dad being in the hospital, not trying to seek comfort from her. She is either working or going no contact after the breakup. It sucks. I was there 3 years ago and looking back I say, "thank God I was left alone." It helped me realize I was seeking external validation my whole life. Good on you for being there for your Dad. You're a good son.

When it happened to me, I threw the world's biggest pity party, party of one, and drank excessively for 9 months. Thought I could write a book about the injustice but now realize cheating is so common it would be a snoozer. Seems like everyone has experienced it. I'm not unique. Sometimes the best gifts come in wicked wraps. My rational mind knows it was for the best and I was given freedom by her infidelity, but I still carried resentment in my heart. It just took that to separate us otherwise …

Cool. My friend referred to my house as the "Home of Peace and Serenity" a couple weeks ago. I like it and may even get a sign for the door. My nieces and nephew got my brother noise cancelling headphones for his birthday and said I needed some. I said I already have that; it's called my house. My living room. My bathroom. Quiet and peaceful.

After the heartbreak and despair following the failure of my 9+ year relationship (her infidelity) I was lead to sobriety and spiritual growth through the 12 steps. I've learn to not take myself so seriously and to stop trying to control everything. I understand serenity and peace a little better and will protect it. Obligating myself to another person is of the table because of the likelihood it will compromise my peace of mind. Enjoying the simple things in life, just me and my dog.

One instance that comes to mind is being in a public setting and her petting my face while shushing me (as if to say no one cares you idiot). I called her out on it then and later. I still think about how completely disrespectful and cunty that was years later.

Non compliance = abuse. If I didn't grovel when she was upset with something and agree her concerns were legitimate, she would get emotional. Getting emotional for not getting her way was my provocation, therefore abuse.

"Women now are more inclined to demand to have all their needs met.” - Demands. All. Needs and desires? “and that they actually require variety and novelty of sexual experience more than men do.” - Actually required. Thrills rule the day. I do not have unlimited novelty to dispense.

I'm 36 as well. Dated a girl from 2007-2016 and it was not pleasant. I was addicted to her validation whenever I could get it. I'm not dating because of the trust issues I developed from her cheating and the stuff I read here. How someone could sleep around and come home to their partner of 9 years and act like nothing was going on - evil. I served a purpose. Her keeping me around gave her affairs excitement because it was wrong/bad. So hot, what a thrill. If she would have ended it, it would no…

Probably because the "lower" man has 1 or 2 traits the "alpha" doesn't. "He likes to sing karaoke but the alpha doesn't."

My ex had $80k in debt with no degree. Was trying for early childhood development but couldn't finish for one reason or another. The going back to defer payments was part of it. This is someone who already worked at an "early childhood development center" (daycare). When she cheated and left I was heartbroken but my brother made me realize what a loser she was. I've known people with mental disabilities that finished that degree. Dodged a bullet, thanks to her decision to pursue her thrills.

Maybe she feels guilty for leading him on and allowing things to escalate. Can't have that - accountability for her involvement. Need to be a victim to reconcile the guilt. Maybe.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm a recovering alcoholic. Working the steps has brought me freedom from both alcohol and the intense desire for external validation. It's still a journey but with a true relationship and my own understanding of God, I've found serenity and peace of mind. The gift of desperation came after my girlfriend of 9+ years cheated on me. Sometimes the best gifts come in wicked wraps. I'll add that I'm aware of my own character defects and responsibility in the relationship b…

Thanks for sharing man. I hope if those now invisible scars were physical that any emotional scars heal as well. I'm trying to get to the point of indifference with my ex. I still honestly wish ill will on her and look forward to the day I can 100% let it go. It's been 2 years. You deserve better man, I do too. We are not spare tires or back up plans. I'm still processing the fact that what I thought was possible with women, what I deserve doesn't exist and I'd be a fool to seek it - knowing I c…

Women do not value a man's heart and soul long term - they value novelty and no one has an unlimited supply. They need multiple sources of novelty to get their fix. Tingles rule the day, but it's a fool's errand because they too trow away good value because feelings and emotion. They will lose but probably won't admit it in their quest for MORE. I will no longer sing. I will not dance. I am a human, not a show, not a toy.

What a nightmare. Thanks for the insight and gratitude check. The percentages I mentioned are just federal tax. Do you have personal property and sales tax as well? We also have a 6% sales tax on purchases, 1% local tax, city fees passed on water bills, personal property tax, social security & Medicare tax, 6% state tax. They've got us coming and going.

My LTR ended a little over 2 years ago. Looked at my Social Security Statement and realize she made the decision to leave as I was getting higher salaries but she wasn't interested in my goings on enough to realize. I paid for everything including her health insurance. Without her I went from $40k in retirement to nearly $100k today (was more but the market is down). I'm pleased with that progress in 2 years. In a position to save $26k annually - making sure I stay in the 12% tax bracket vs. 22%…

Trickle truth. My ex found out a family member was going to tell me about her cheating so she "beat her to it" by telling me as little as possible. Enough for her to feel like she told me, but no where near the full truth. This does sound highly suspicious. Don't be a little bitch like me and try to work it out. What she did hurt my pride, my desperately trying to keep her afterwards completely destroyed my pride/respect (SELF respect). Wish I would have walked away at the first hint. Good luck …

No I didn't mean the term to be an insult. I love my step father and would describe him as a beta provider. He puts up with a lot of stuff I wouldn't. I'm not that invested in the positive/negative connotations of alpha/beta and would have to classify myself as a beta if I'm being honest.

I do not have unlimited novelty to dispense. I cannot get into a relationship knowing that unless I sing, dance and entertain forever, she will find another show.

I was in a 9 year relationship and saved $40k in my retirement account. She cheated and left a little under 2 years ago. My brother helped to rearrange my budget and I now have $105k. A big factor is abstinence from alcohol but also not buying frivolous stuff (more minimalist lifestyle). Without the hell of that relationship I was able to focus on my well being and get my life right. I have true peace of mind and serenity today.
