Honestly this depends, but I think part of your issue is definitely the simple fact that you are belying your confidence on the result. Someone put this really well, but when you have feelings for a friend, you aren’t confessing your feelings or confessing your love. You are simply having a discussion with a friend. Yeah you might lose them but as long as you approach the situation with respect, calm, collected and willing to accept whatever answer, keeping them locked away is just going to cause more heartache.
