No it's a problem everywhere. You met students, who were doing an exchange programme abroad. Obviously they are more friendly and open minded. 99% of Chinese are NOT like this. You can choose to go, but it won't be easy to make new friends and people will look at you funny everywhere you go. Most days I even got cursed at on the street, for being a white foreigner in Shanghai, they thought I didn't speak Chinese.

I lived in Shanghai for a while but came home earlier than planned because I hated it so much. China sucks man (Hong Kong and Taiwan are OK though).
