I’ve felt like this before, with a girl that I thought had the chance that she would be the one. Similar background details as yours - raised by a single mom, estranged dad, only sibling living another state away with his wife. Our ending was the same as well, she broke things off and I was devastated. In my case, I was devastated that things failed because I felt like I could’ve done a bit more and felt that the failure of a relationship was a personal indictment of myself. What made me move on…

I can attest to this. Just being a loss prevention officer in my late teens, early twenties at my local retail store, got me a lot of exposure and women were throwing themselves at me. As OP said, it is the idea of being with "that guy" that gets them interested. Fast forward a few years, working in management in a male dominated field, hardly any women are approaching me, as they did years ago.
