IMO it's the worst thing to say to anybody in any situation. If OP wants to firmly stand up for himself he can say, "Please do not say disrespectful things to me." And if OP wants to get hard he can also ask for an apology. Just because other people don't have manners doesn't others shouldn't. It's about maintaining class and decorum in adverse situations.

This is horrible advice and could lead to someone getting badly hurt or embarrassed. I let no one dominate me in conversation and my main goal is to stay cheerful, polite and NEVER resort to name calling and curse words, its the ultimate sign of weakness. OP your best friend here is humility and quick wit. Take the wind out of the aggressors sails by beating him to his own jokes. Be self deprecating and show everyone that you've thought of it all first and have already come to terms, on your own…
