I never said sex wasn't complicated, it definitely is. It's primal, essential feeling that's hard to socialize because it runs counter to so much of our civilized behavior, and motivates people to act in ways that destroys social capital. That's why it requires very complex and sophisticated socialization. I'm not really sure what you mean about point 2. I think people do want intimacy. I think maybe you're referring to people telling sweet nothings and then bailing as soon as they get sex? Well…

Sex is a normal, healthy, natural part of life. Intimacy is an incredibly important aspect of psychological well being, and has long lasting physiological and psychological benefits. Our current generation's biggest problem is alienation and isolation, mostly driven by social media amplifying some of our worst social tendencies, creating a baseline paranoia and anxiety that seems to be the background noise of the culture at large. People are 'weird' about sex because the cultural language and pr…

I think that whenever a group becomes a majority in any sector, there's a runaway effect where the norms begin to serve and protect them and the narratives begin to quell dissent for arguing against those norms (humans are REALLY good at defending norms when they become entrenched, and we defend them as though we are defending reality itself). Just as men used to be the majority in the office, and the norms protected and served them. I think this viewpoint is what we're seeing now: we redressed …

Not true, they still prefer someone who makes more than them, because women understand they can always do better.

This isn't true actually. As egalitarian norms rise, mate selection preference becomes more pronounced. Women on average have an innate preference for higher SES men with greater resources, personal connections, and prestige. In countries where gender egalitarianism is highest (Norway, Sweden, etc), that preference is at its highest. It turns out the more autonomy you grant to women, the less their biology is constrained, which means the preference amplifies. Women select the MOST provider quali…
/r/PurplePillDebate16/07/26 10:03 PM

I can agree with that, and we definitely need norms to protect the vulnerable
/r/PurplePillDebate07/07/26 10:36 PM

No, that's what i'm saying. Since men preferring post pubescent youth is universal across cultures, it points to a biological basis. There's deeper evidence like facial-metrics showing a universal preference for a mixture of neo-natal characteristics mixed with signs of sexual maturity -- think disney princesses: big baby-like eyes, but mature cheekbones, infantalized foreheads but big pouting lips. So, since this is culturally inadmissable due to recent trends in the sexual discourse, it become…
/r/PurplePillDebate07/07/26 10:25 PM

Conditioning of course plays some role, but given the fact that youth, signs of fertility, and health are universally valued factors, that points to a biological basis, likely the larger reproductive window during the mateship, as well as the asymmetrical submission dominance dynamic (which also seems to be a relational default in heterosexual dynamics, as our pleasure circuits are set up for clear relational roles, with amygdaloidal activation occuring during mirrored posturing, versus security…

Actual pedophilia (pre-pubescence) is exceedingly rare, 1-3% pedophilic interest in men, less than 1% in women, largely due to structural differences in areas of the brain that handle moral reasoning, consequence calculation, and impulse control. Men on average have less impulse control (due to differential rates in serotenurgic availability (it replenishes slower in men), and higher baseline dopamine and different processing of potential rewards. In short, men are more risk taking in general be…

Yeah but you can't extend the principle if they aren't similarly applicable, that becomes a facile rhetorical tactic rather than a cogent explanation or point. If you want to really have a conversation, I think you need to have a good faith examination for why sex and sexual access is historically and culturally treated like a resource -- parse out the cases in which it's treated like a resource and when it isn't, and also if there's a precedent and purpose for other times when we treat "doings"…

You're really onto nothing here. This is a false analogy you've attempted to extend to something that has far deeper personal and social meaning, so you can't extend the aspects of one by virtue of that analogy, since those aspects are completely different and require different treatment.

Because it becomes something they want to do if the normative social narratives declare it to be so. Social reality is consensus reality, so what we're really talking about here is which consensus resolves the most social problems with causing the least -- we're choosing which suite of solutions and problems to inherit.
/r/PurplePillDebate28/06/26 09:05 PM

Well, pressure is probably only one part of the equation. People will value what those around them value. It contains the negative incentive of social judgment for falling outside the norm, but also the positive invebtive of pursuing what those around you pursue, with an intact culture set up to facilitate that pursuit.
/r/PurplePillDebate28/06/26 08:22 PM

But most people have found relationships through most of our history, because culture modulated that nature
/r/PurplePillDebate28/06/26 08:09 PM

Man this is grimdark I guess maybe we can find the non authroitarian version where we say we want society to incentivize prosocial actions towards society, and fostering relations is part of that. Doesn't mean we assign breeding or anything weird like that. It just means we encourage romantic love in the culture, and make life easier to start families.

It's still alive and well, unfortunately. No matter what women do to gain attention and signal approach, the men are still villified. Sexlessness abounds, birth rates are collapsing. You have to abuse mammals quite a bit to get them to stop mating, and we've created a culture that essentially automatically handles the job. And it will only get worse.

I think all it means is that we as a culture are not currently in a cancellation hysteria. We can enter into that culture moment again with enough momentum, but I think it was a historical moment where the crowd realized they could realize their will with enough pressure en-masse, but the negative consequences built up until we as a culture stopped making it the new normal. I understand, and i think people have the ethical right to end their life if they choose. But i also understand that the mind is endlessly malleable, and people on the outside feel an obligation to uncover the beauty and potential within that mind by changing the associations and patterns that make a person perceive the experience of life as misery.

I guess it's about a fundamental belief in the inherent dignity and potential of life. I was suicidal through most of my 20's, I lost my father to suicide when he was in his 40s. I spent a lot of time thinking about this question, and I was even on a crisis intervention team (where the women often laughed at the men for being suicidal despite their "privilege.") I think it's because the beauty of life is worth its suffering. I have a steadfast belief in the idea that people can transcend their p…

On my psych degree my Philosophy classes were some of my favorites (we had to take a "focus" class series, like a minor but not). Mine were Formal Logic (got 100% on the midterm!), Early Modern Philosophy (like Bacon, Descartes, Hume, Leibniz, Spinoza), Existentialism, and Philosophy of Work and Leisure (which was a super boring class because I thought it was going to be about the good life, and not a bunch of dry marxist readings). There are scouts and cub scouts, i'm sure in some areas there are overlap.
/r/PurplePillDebate25/04/26 09:19 PM

Scouts are ages 11-17, hardwired genetic behavior patterns will activate in continued close proximity (showing off, jealousy, gossiping, mate competition, etc) and we don't have mature responses to this as a culture. It is important for people to have structured interaction to see the humanity of others, but it's also important to have spaces where we don't have to deal with the anxiety and tension of these innate dynamics.
/r/PurplePillDebate25/04/26 09:16 PM

No, and i hate how there's been a push to eliminate male only spaces under the perspective that they exclude women. It's ok for some things to be separate! The boy scouts don't need to just be scouts. There genuinely are dynamics that play out between men and women that make coexistence hard sometimes, and anxiety, tension, and conflict inevitable. While we need to learn how to deal with these things, we need to also have spaces where girls can just be girls without having to worry about guys, a…

No, sorry, there are mountains of evidence showing this to be untrue. Semen quality doesn't begin declining until much later in life. Women's chance at producing healthy offspring begins rapidly declining in their 30s (to single digits by the end of their 30s) and men are acutely fine tuned to pick up on those cues. If you graph women's chance of successful reproduction versus an aggregate of ratings given to women distributed across those ages, you will find those graphs near perfectly line up. Most truths about human sexuality are fairly unsavory, and the decorum we make when we talk about it publicly isn't to accurately describe how sexuality works, but a ritual to comfort us by pretending we are more civilized creatures than we are. In many ways, the sexual discourse is the exact opposite of sexual reality. We used to know this -- Freud, Foucault, Bataille all wrote extensively on this subject. I wouldn't be so accusatory I would say that our society's inability to speak openly about underlying sexual tensions and conflicts creates resentment and frustration, and that requires an outlet to understand and voice those things. More complicated than all that. We do AND we don't, we make examples so the unbanishable primal aspects get to continue operating underneath the surface, since it's an inextricable part of what we are, and the inmate behavior patterns hard wired into mammallian behavior.

It's a concept from social psychology. (Read Elliot Aronson) When we feel like something disrupts our sense of who we are, or of the standard consensus of the tribe we belong to, we become hostile and engage in rationalization or attacking the source of information.

I think it's because in recent years we've symbolically condemned men in order to historically break away to a "post patriarchy" state of society. There's this really interesting section in "Behave" by Robert Sapolsky about how essential the symbols of identity become to social conflict -- how people will sacrifice their lives to plant a flag on a hill, how revolutions usually involve a period of desecration of the previous society's sacred symbols and rituals (tearing down statues, christians d…

It seems like either viewpoint is preoccupied with punitively finding fault We need to culturally shift this conversation. Accountability now means socially sanctioning cruelty and aggression. No i think being coy is actually an innate part of the courtship process. We signal covertly because sexual messaging has to be discrete and deniable until it reaches a certain threshold (language of desire is a good book on this). Many inherent aspects of human sexuality are impolite and unsavory, so the way they are subsumed by the social apparatus makes it topsy turvy and contradictory on appearance. On the contrary, the courtship dance between men and women is a push-pull tango until the woman willingly gives up her propriety. She can't give it up too fast without being ashamed, she can't give it up too slow or the man moves on. If no decorum is broached, then nothing sexy at all ever happens. It's an ancient and savage dance. Learn how to love it.

Why do we have norms? They are the structure of interactions that guide individuals towards the social motives of society. When they work well, they generate social capital, form cohesion, and protect social stability. But norms are incredibly complicated and context sensitive. They are "porous", meant to keep conduct at bay but other conduct through. Confidence is learning how to dance the right dance to be let through, not just ignore norms. It's about find…

For sure, reading my comment back I can see how much malicious intent I'm ascribing, which ironically is probably how it looks from the other side too. It's also a way to exercise your desire to be aggressive and cruel against a sanctioned target. If we can say someone deserves something, we give ourselves the greenlight to aggress. A big part of that comes from the hysteria surrounding innate primal sexual dynamics which we increasingly condemn and control with the discourse we use to talk about it. /r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/09/25 11:29 PM

There are a few main reasons I think The first is that culture rewards fidelity in women because of paternity uncertainty. Promiscuity in women is de-incentivized because we want to be certain about parentage so men don't squander their resources. The second is that sexuality is a primary resource for women, one of their main assets they can leverage for both social and economic capital. This is why the main people who hate sluts are actually women, and in fact most slut shaming does in fact com…

I think that's definitely part of the cultural component, but I also think it is primarily determined by nature, of hundreds and thousands of years of procreation occurring through force, of a nature that links our pleasure circuits to expressions of dominance and submission. I think our natures just aren't as neat or clean as this. I think it's good that we want to responsibly engage with our primal instincts, to satisfy our sexual urges without actually denigrating someone, but the intermixture of animal desire and the need to be a caring, moral human in a humane society leads to a lot of irresolvable contradictions, skillful concealment of what we really want, and rationalizations of our worst behaviors. No it isn't, it's the anti-sex cultural narrative being espoused by radical feminists that have made women overly afraid of acting on their desires or learning the skills to navigate sexual interactions and set boundaries. We've regressed from a sexually liberated culture to pre 1950's. Before the brainwashing occurred, women didn't need men to be desireless and neutered, and even liked the brave and bold ones. I worked in a mental health clinic for just under a year as a crisis peer in a very progressive city, and it was very common to hear completely un-examined misandry on the team. The girls would laugh to each other sometimes after seeing a white man, saying "he'll be fine, he's privileged." I brought up to my super gay coworker that the vast majority of suicides are older white men and he said it was because they're so privileged they don't know how to handle crisis. I think people grossly undere…

Humans are prone to many psychological pitfalls and distortions that come evolving in small bands of people. It means groups need to cohere over a common narrative that's hemmed in by a simplified account of in-group/out-group conflict. This narrative tends to appeal symbolically to disgust eliciting imagery, activating our insular cortex which is responsible for the subjective experience of disgust, and is connected to our associative network. The underlying reason for this is that evolution is…

I overall support the project of feminism, of equal access to opportunities between men and women, as well as a culture that encourages respect between men and women. I don't deny that historically our institutions have been patriarchal, barring women from equal participation society. I think that most people who dislike the modern feminist movement probably don't dispute this (though I don't speak for them). The problem is how antagonistic the discourse has gotten, and how an oppressor-victim n…

We are still running on caveman instincts. Caveman instincts shaped by an evolving culture. "Job" is kind of a loaded phrasing on my part. Because I think that's an oversimplication of human social dynamics. That all of us contain sadism, violence, deception, and benevolence to different degrees. I think collapsing any dynamic to "perpatrator/victim" is usually an oversimplification of relationship dynamics, and most people need therapy rather than condemnation. Yes, people hit each other, yes people berate and humiliate each other -- it's because I don't think a label ever totally contains a person.

Isn't this fairly black-or-white? Can't you also have conversations about the trade-offs of the rules, and the fluidity of their application. I don't think anyone really thinks there should be a 1:1 correspondence between norms and actions at all times. Life happens in the ambiguous space inbetween. If the rules are repressive, people have every right to resist those rules and live outside of them.

This is a specific reaction to the state of sex work as it is and not as it could be if it were a regulated, revered, and respected institution. That kind of view of degradation and trading of dignity is not contingent on the act of sex itself or the associated psycho-drama, but of an idea of what the transaction is like. I think sex workers should be trained like therapists and become sexual healers and connectors, which would be possible with legalization and control.

I think shaming the game is part of the game Being able to make romantic moves, knowing that it will cause sexual conflict and tension, and successfully navigating that, has to be part of the social structure since we see it across cultures. I also think it's a little off base to say "women are indirect beings" I think it's better to say, "We've evolved discretion because we are in competition for mates and that competition drives conflict and disarray."

I learned about this in social psych! There's a phenomenon called "group polarization" Where the most extreme voices in the group cause convergence towards those extremes. People concede out of survival instinct and to identify themselves in contrast against those they highlight. Meeting and engaging in discourse as a group has the tendency to radicalize regardless about what the groups identity or function is.

Reality cures most of our misunderstandings. Go outside and see that most people are smiling at each other, enjoying positively in each other's company. Bad things happen, and many people have a defensive reaction to the world, but you'll find in general that people are much better than we think them to be. People with bitter, hateful worldviews are the problem, male or female. Thank you for being a cool person!

The thing is I don't think a lot of men want to be radicalized I think most of us just want people to stop laughing at our pain, or to be called privileged when we are the punching bag for all of society. There's nothing for man to be anymore. The only choice is alienation. I just wish all of us tried to understand each other with compassion, male and female. Civilization was a mistake. We're not supposed to live this way and there's no way to make it not hurt.

It's deeply sad. Men and women are now both terrified of each other. Unfortunately, we respond to fear and outrage more easily than anything else, so the news cycle propagates itself by feeding that. I think that's why for all of us the first task should be maintaining your humanity. Surround yourself with love and understanding so that this stuff, for the most part, falls away.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
