That's quite a ballsy announcement. There's clear and unambiguous criticism of "rape culture" as a concept, condemnation of campus tribunals, and then there's this recommendation: Risk-reduction messaging: empowering members of the community to take steps to increase their personal safety. This is not going to go down well with feminists.

I also note that the feminist social media horde has swung into action to defend one of their own. I wonder what they'd be doing if this was a story about Paul Elam, Warren Farrel, etc...

It is quite remarkable that a politician who has spent their entire career stoking fear over child sexualisation and causing completely innocent men to be treated with suspicion, is herself linked to an organisation of ACTUAL paedophiles. I find myself wondering if her whole 'anti-sexualisation' spiel wasn't just a cynical politician's ploy to distance herself from the mistakes of the past.

I'm somewhat inclined to believe him. I've worked in government, and I know how long it takes for dodgy research to get pumped out of the system. We saw it with human trafficking, when feminist groups managed to convince govt departments of the most ludicrous statistics during 2003-09. After the overhyped claims were exposed, government agencies took a good hard look at their research base and started throwing out the trash. They are now being much more vigilant about dodgy statistics in that pa…

Yep, Britain is big on moral panics. It used to be the Church & Mary Whitehouse driving it, now it's the feminists.

Not really. This was pushed for by sex-neg feminists and is part of the wider campaign to delegitimatize male sexuality. Is erotica included in this anti-porn campaign? Of course not. Erotica appeals to female sexuality and is going to be protected.

Heh. The comment was deleted. That was fast. Slightly odd as Guardian mods usually leave a note saying "this comment was removed".

RationalWiki was taken over by the AtheismPlus chucklefucks during the elevatorgate hoo-ha. It has long since abandoned any semblance of skepticism on gender issues.

It's clearly a joke, and a clever one at that because it reveals a nasty truth about (many) relationships. Jokes are OK, even - nay - especially about sensitive subjects. Let's not be like the feminists on this.

speaking from the perspective of any orientation as if it should define all behavior That's pretty much what I think the word means. Obviously it's unavoidable in most circumstances, but there are some contexts in which it's appropriate not to speak that way. Given that the Antigones are involving themselves in gender politics, it might be helpful for them to acknowledge the issue at some point, although I don't think it's a massively crippling problem. I certainly don't agree with the idea of m…

Indeed, I was also worried about the religious symbolism, especially given that FEMEN came to France specifically to support gay marriage (that's admirable of course, but it doesn't take away from the obvious misandry and illiberalism of the rest of femen's platform). However, their website claims they do not have any religious affiliation and doesn't even mention the gay marriage issue. I like the message of men and women needing each other. In the misandric and (occasionally) misogynistic cont…

There's a reason why innovation is called innovation. It involves creating something new that breaks the mould and still manages to be successful. If you honestly believe that video games have become stale and formulaic, no-one would object if you tried to make something different. That's what Citizen Kane did, that's what Star Wars did, that's what any number of innovative works of art have done. As I said, creation is better than suppression. If you want to criticize something as being overdon…

This is astonishing. It's clear that you're a smart kid, you have an enquiring political mind, and that report is extremely well put together by 8th grade standards. And yet they penalise you for it! Talk to your parents, and go with them together to complain to the principal. If that doesn't work, contact the higher-ups (I assume that would be the school board?) If you are rebuffed again, contact the press (local and national). I have experience with this sort of thing, so you or your parents c…

True, but they objectify the women as masses when they do that. The majority of video games with a woman character she is the sexy diva in distress that would hook up with her savior. Ok, first of all, what do you mean by "objectify them as masses"? What definition of objectification are you working with here? Secondly, what's wrong with "sexy divas in distress", if some people enjoy them? That's the issue here - some people have a preference for boobs, sexy divas, etc etc, and that's really no-…

Fair enough. My main objection to people who criticize the sex industry as "exploitative" is that there's nothing that separates it from other industries on any moral level. If a strip club worker is being exploited, so is a Tesco worker, so is an HSBC worker. Most (non-communist) people squirm when they face this argument, because they want to be able to criticize the sex industry without criticizing the entire capitalist structure. The communist position is the only position to which my argume…

Well I can actually respect that. That's a consistent (if utopian) position - which is more than can be said for the feminist groups who campaign against page 3 without saying anything about capitalism. You think that it's the involvement of money that makes page 3 and (some) porn illegitimate, correct? It adds an element of financial pressure, which turns it into exploitation?

Women are sexually repressed so men can be liberated? Ha, you are a fool. Misrepresentation and insults already? That was quick. Women are of course free to engage in any sexual activity they choose. (Except modeling on page 3 of the Sun, according to you.) Uh, yeah, exactly. A woman can do whatever she wants with her body. .....Except model on page 3 of the Sun. When you turn a woman into sexualized graphics, that is objectification. Because it satisfies a male sexual preference? I just love th…

Feminism is about sexually liberating women. At the cost of sexually repressing men. (And women who have "inconvenient" sexual preferences, of course.) Because it is objectifying. The fact that pretty much all women video game characters run around with limited clothing and their breasts bouncing around is obvious objectification. And here we have the face of feminist double standards. If a woman takes her clothes off to "sexually liberate" herself, that's totally OK. On the other hand, If a man…

I'm going to start using "You Go Girl" culture as an actual concept now, or "YGG Culture" for short. It's the perfect way to describe the relentless promotion of women's interests - womens' interests, not womens' rights - with no thought given to anything else. Objective standards of egalitarianism? Nope, womens' interests. Objective standards of morality? Nope, womens' interests. Objective standards of the public good? Nope...

Almost as if it's controversial because of it's relation to objectification. Precisely. And it shouldn't be. Because there is no relation. The fact that you see a male sexual preference as something controversial speaks volumes. This is why the Stonewall message is so important. Other peoples' sexual preferences are not your business. Get over it. I like how you distilled the whole argument into a bumper sticker catchphrase. Thanks, but it was actually the Stonewall Foundation who provided the o…

Try Avery Haines at CityNews Toronto. (@CityAvery) She has a regular feature called "The Inside Story" and accept suggestions. She's also prepared to give MRA issues a fair hearing. Failing that, Michael Coren at the Toronto Sun will definitely take the story. The sun is quite tacky though. Really tough, we should be emailing and tweeting all of them, including Maddow. Not to mention, countless others (1 2 3 4) in this thread drew a connection to objectification Seeing as you're so good at pointing out logical fallacies, perhaps you should look up tu quoque. I guess they were all being pedants too, who totally misunderstand the deep, philosophical underpinnings of your clever MEN LIKE BOOBS poster... Well you obviously missed one aim of the poster, which is to draw attention to the fact that even a simple statement of male sexual preference like "men like boob…

Well you might want to look up the definition of "pedant" as well. Try "red herring" also. FYI you didn't actually have a "position" - you had a snarky attempt at humor. What the snarky attempt at humor reveals, however, is that the minute you heard about men liking boobs, you made a link with objectification. That is, you made a link from a concept that should have no moral connotations whatsoever (men liking boobs) to a concept that does (objectification). You can try and run away from that fa…

what is this possibly attacking? Sex-negative feminism. Is it to say that men can't like boobs now? Cause that's stupid It is not only stupid, it is intolerant. Yet feminists seem determined to quash (visual) sexual content wherever they can find it. We can only assume that they have no respect whatsoever for male sexual preferences. Is it to say that men should be able to stare at women's boobs at leisure? Because that's even stupider Whose boobs? A video-game character's? A page 3 model's? An …

Be pedantic if you will, the point still stands. If "objectification" - and all its negative moral connotations - is a concept that leaps into your head the minute you hear about men liking boobs, then you really do have a problem with male sexuality. It's precisely this type of thinking that makes slogans like this a necessity.
/r/MensRights27/04/13 03:11 AM

Except it isn't a strawman. Here's your comment. Sexual attraction and objectification in western culture is a complex multi-faceted issue The poster says men like boobs. It doesn't say "some men like to objectify". It only mentions boobs. And yet, you immediately make a connection to objectification. See the problem yet?
/r/MensRights27/04/13 02:59 AM

Because liking boobs and objectification are totally the same thing! And you wonder why we feel a need for slogans like this.

I only said that without context your poster could be viewed as anti-gay similar to the banned one the Christians made. The Christian poster was explicitly anti-gay. It said people should be proud of having "overcome" gayness. This does nothing of the sort. If all the other spin-offs based on other sexual preferences aren't anti-gay, I don't see how this one is. It "could be viewed as such" if people were frantically looking to make such a connection, and even then they could only manage it by g…

Gays? No. It's feminists who are oppressing (or trying to oppress) male sexuality with their crusade against "sexualization". Notice that they don't crusade against erotic literature which appeals primarily to female sexuality. That would be a real campaign against sexualization. Instead, they choose to only crusade agaisnt (visual) porn and big-breasted video game characters. So much double standard.

I agree with this poster 100% though because I'm sick of society having a crippling fear of being open and honest about human sexuality in general, reacting by pretending it doesn't exist or demonizing it. Thanks for this post. I personally feel that the constant, ceaseless attack on "sexualization" in videogames and elsewhere (not to mention the ongoing feminist campaign against porn) is an astonishing assault on peoples' sexual preferences. Let's just make a simplified poster that says "Living…

Hi. I really like your approach. I'm in the process of setting up a collaborative blog myself, with some politically minded friends. Your story is very encouraging. Most people employ "dissonance avoidance" strategies to avoid feeling of dissonance. This usually involves suppression of dissonant facts, or insulating yourself from contrary opinion by surrounding yourself only with like-minded people. The ability, as you did, to actually seek out contrary opinion and not shut it out is truly rare.

Up untill now, I believed that the Damsels-in-distress trope is important because it triggers the male instinct to respond to female vulnerability cues. This phenomenon is actually well-documented by the latest psychological research (see Goetz et al, 2012). As such, I felt that attempts to remove the DiD trope altogether constitute an unfair demonization of a legitimate male emotion, one that artists have every right to trigger in the course of their narrative. I never considered the trope from…

Distasteful though these tactics may be, they do seem to serve a purpose. Clearly, that purpose isn't presenting a factually accurate case, so what is it? Manipulating peoples' emotions and firing up your ideological "team" are two likely candidates. I think it worth looking into tactics like this. Clearly the facts don't matter - as long as you flip peoples' emotional switches, you get your result. But we can't sit on our high horses and just present the facts in a rational, disinterested, disp…
