I think otherwise. It depends on the place at which you're working out. If you're in crossfit or a class-based gym you're bound to make small talk or at least exchange pleasantries. A gym is ironically a good space to not only workout at your whim but also connect with other guys over fitness, diet plans, etc, if one is interested in mingling among members of the gym, of course.

I go to a non mixed gym. Theres a female section on the other side. Every now and then I would see a female staffer walk into the men's section without anyone batting an eye. If a guy did that walked straight into the female section, all hell would brake loose. They will react as if they a human sized cockroach. Its not unacceptable to a share an elevator ride with a lone woman, but I personally wouldn't if I weren't the first one waiting for it. In my culture its frowned upon that getting close to a female who isnt related to you given the chocie. Some exceptions would be like standing behind or in front of a woman is okay. I'm not afraid per say. It's just that I dont wanna get close in a confinement for a couple of seconds with the opposite sex who I haven't seen or talked to, given the choice. Maybe I was raised that way, but i just feel more comfortable catching the next elevator. If I was waiting first and a woman come along and waits too, then I'll go in first regardless if she comes in. But not the other way around.
