I've had good results with Aqua di gio but I've also ran into women saying saying it reminded them of their ex-boyfriend/dad etc because it is a common scent. This is pretty evident from the sheer amount of recommendations it receives. What I did was switch to Guilty by Gucci. I get the same amount of compliments on it but it's a newer scent that isn't as played out. Also.....Men wear cologne, women wear perfume.

Historical reenacting (ie Civil War, WWII, etc). Doesn't get much more manly than sleeping in the dirt, firing weapons at one another (even using blank loads), camping, and tramping around with 20 or so of your closest male friends. Creates a huge sense of camaraderie.
