Universities will always want to make themselves look good. So I do believe that these universities have a vested interest in under reporting the number of rapes or obscuring the crime statistics and that something should be done about it. Just like they would if there was a higher number of muggings that occur on a campus. So I do disagree with the subbys point here. To be fair the police have to investigate and decide whether or not an assault occurred and then a prosecutor has to decide whether or not to prosecute a case (and that decision isn't based on whether or not someone was raped but rather can they win that case or not). This was a university library not a public town library. It is difficult to convict someone of something like that when there are no witnesses. I don't think that she was charged with any sex offender crimes because she was a woman but because they could not provide enough evidence to reasonably convict her of that crime. We should assume that she was telling the truth about being raped not about who did it. A guy get mugged and we don't know who mugged him does the newspaper report it as "a man was allegedly mugged" or does it report it as "a man was mugged"?
