Thanks for this post! Question for GayLubeOil: I'm a man on the downside of middle age with multiple very successful businesses based here in the US serving a US market. My businesses wouldn't necessarily translate well overseas. i.e. I'd have to sell out if I moved overseas. My children are here in the US and there is zero chance my wife would want to leave them and move overseas. Although I am very well off financially and could support my wife and myself very well over seas, I couldn't suppor…

I understand about having a good friend. I've got a couple of good friends, and a few other just regular friends. They are all guys. My longest term friend has been my buddy since kindergarten (1969 to give you some perspective on the time frame.....so, yeah, I'm one of the older guys in this group). He and I have been thru thick and thin together. We've had a few times where we've gone a couple of years without talking or hanging out because sometimes....well.....life happens. But when we get t…

Sam was a very good college player. Yes, he performed poorly at the combine, but the way he "came out" cost him a lot. Most teams didn't want that kind of hassle. Then when he did get drafted (STL Rams, I think?) he kissed his gay lover on live TV. That turned off a lot of fans. I personally couldn't care less, but it didn't have the desired outcome.

This is a very good post. I'm surprised by how many people are panning it. I think the reason they are is because your post has put a mirror up to their face and they don't like what they see. The greatest talent most people have is coming up with PLE's (Perfectly Legitimate Excuses) to justify either their failures or their lack of success. Most people, even those that read this sub, are not coming anywhere near achieving their peak potential. So they justify their shortcomings with PLE's to fe…

As much as I loved football, I would NOT let my kids play it. Not a chance. Even though I never went further than high school, I played against guys that went on to have stellar NFL careers. I wasn't in their category....but the thing is....35+ years later, I still feel the injuries. I choose to not let my son's play because I didn't want them to have to deal with pain later in life. I wasn't willing to risk their futures. I don't know if I have CTE, but I know I've had a dozen or more concussio…

When it comes to tattoos, I'm completely libertarian on them. I am 100% for you getting all the tattoos you want. But if you want to work for me, you will keep them covered. No questions asked. And if you can't cover them, I won't be hiring you. That choice you've made has effectively limited your options for the rest of your life. And please note: I'm not saying this to put you down or insult you. We're on the redpill here, so we've got to deal with reality. And the reality is....well....I just…

Even if you thought it through for a long time, it's still a limiting decision. Here's the way it was described to me by the CEO of a very large insurance company over dinner one night: Getting a tattoo is like saying, "I really like these pants! I'm gonna wear them for the rest of my life". Like it or not, when you get a tattoo, even a well thought-out tattoo, there is a large contingency of people that find that off-putting. That is the chance you are taking. I'd be hard pressed to find anyone…

This women is delusional. Let me tell you my story. In high, I was a athletic stud. I was 6'4", I weighed 195 lbs. I high jumped 6'8", I ran a 4.5 forty (that was back in the day with handheld stop watches, so take that with a grain of salt....but regardless, I was smokin' fast). And to top it off, I was smart and white. I had some nice Dl and lots of Dll schools looking at me. My dream was to play in the NFL as wide receiver. Lynn Swann was my idol. Financial services. Look, I have no problem with tattoos. If you want to get'em, then do so by all means. But the reality is that there are consequences to those choices. I've never had anyone say to me, "Well u/boogersaretasty, I'd invest $5,000,000 with you, but you just don't have any tattoos". Conversely, I've lost at least one large deal because an employee didn't cover their tattoos. Youthful decisions have consequences that will effect you the rest of your life. Choose wisely.

I call tattoos, "self-inflicted, career limiting body disfigurements". I have employees with tattoos, but they are required to keep them covered at all times. That applies to both men and women. No visible tats.

Lots of great advice in this post! Allow me to elaborate on this. Many people think you can't invest in a Roth if you make too much money. Poppycock. If you make too much, then just invest the maximum amount you can into a NON-deductible traditional IRA. Then convert it to a Roth. Bingo! Roth IRA! If you want inexpensive trades and have some money, then look at Interactive Brokers. They have the best trading cost (my firms average trading cost is $1.38), get you great execution and pay pretty we…

As a "financial adviser" I can completely understand this wage gap. I do a lot of training of financial reps all across the country. I train financial reps from beginners all the way up to the top 1/10 of 1% of financial professionals. As I stand in front of groups of financial professionals, one thing is very, very clear.....the financial business is a man's game. The women, especially the young women, really struggle. Unfortunately, it's not all that easy anymore. The left (in conjunction with the right) has been slowly but surely building a "Virtual Financial Berlin Wall" around this country. Because of FATCA, it is very difficult, sometimes impossible to open up an account in a foreign country. If you do, it will likely have heavy US oversight. A business partner is frequents this sub is a real expert on FATCA and can comment on it better than I. I'll ask him to try and pop in.

I just scrub myself with soap and hot water at least twice per day. Now the problem is that doing that can result in dry skin, so I have moisturize once in a while. But ingrown hairs can be miserable. If you don't keep them under control, you'll end up having to go to the dermatologist and he'll have to cut them out. I've had minor out patient surgery about 10 times in my youth to have that done. I finally wised up and now shower when I wake up and shower before I go to bed. On the days I workou…

I would love to benefit from cold showers. Unfortunately, I am cursed with ingrown hairs. Take a hot shower at least twice a day that opens my pores and then scrubbing any dirt off me is imperative. If I don't do that then ingrown hairs can become a real problem. No beta whining. Just my reality. I wonder if there are options for people like me?

Inspired by TRP, I started back to the gym about 6 months or so ago. I was getting up at 4:45 am and hit the gym. The problem was that I didn't get home until an average of 10 pm at night after working 14+ days. I was naturally a night owl my whole life so falling asleep early was very hard for me. I got to the point where I was losing my ability function. My memory was shot. I had to change my workout schedule. I get up early some days (at 6 am or so). Other days, I find time to workout during …

I've told this story before, but I'll retell it again here. When I was a freshman in high school I played basketball. It was tradition that the boys freshman team played the girls varsity team each year in an inaugural game to kick off the season. Here we were, 12 freshman boys who had only been playing together for a couple of weeks, going up against junior and senior girls who had been playing together for several years and who had an awesome team (they came in first place in the state the yea…

Thanks for this! Outside of summer jobs when I was in high school and college, I've made my entire living off either commissions, fees, or deals that I've put together. I was going to be a doctor. I went to school year round and had some college credits that I earned in high school. As a result, I was done in 4 years. I probably averaged 18 - 22 credit hours per semester and whatever the maximum was I could take in the summer (with the exception of one summer that I worked). Basically I was a geek when it came to school. I enjoyed the challenge of taking all those hours and classes. I didn't really rack up much debt as I went to college in the early - mid 80's.…

Coming across doesn't work well in the area I work. My goal is to be an asset gatherer and subcontract out the money management. I then manage the managers. So my specialty is really managing the clients. I have found that coming across as harsh is not a good quality when you dealing with people in their 50's, 60's and 70's. So I'm sensitive to that and try not be a "dick".

I'm talking about quality small private money managers that have track records going back, 10, 15, 20, 20+ years of beating the markets. No, they don't beat the market every year, but they consistently beat it on a regular basis over cycles. What I like to look for in PMM's are those that have decent returns in the up years, but have a history of protecting capital in the down years. Since I work mainly with people 50+ (my average client is probably around 68 years old), I am more concerned abou…

opps, sorry I misunderstood. Find a fiduciary to work with. They are hard to find. Very hard to find. And even when you find a fiduciary, don't assume they're going to work in your best interest. Make sure compensation is clear and that it is not transaction driven.

I take NO credit for this response. /u/DrXaos wrote this ITT and I copied it here so you could read it. All credit goes to /u/DrXaos. He does a pretty good write up on the case. The Soros case---the trade was actually invented by his colleague Stanley Druckenmiller---was fairly simple. It was a straight up directional bet. Prior to the euro, the UK central bank had a peg between pound and the proto-euro EMU (basket of continental currencies). The direction of the economies and interest rates wer…

It's a tough game to get into at this time. When I started back in the mid/late 80's, there was a lot more "fat" in the business. Today, the margins are squeezed and it's tough to get into the game as a new guy. Unless you have a great CV or a book of business, you'll probably have to learn the game working for some local firm or an insurance company. Either way, they'll likely require you to build your book of business out of your warm market (friends and family who respect you enough to listen…

CFA is one of the creme' de la creme' of financial alphabet designations! Congratulations on that! I don't have a CFA or any other designation worth mentioning. Thank you for the clarity. My answer is....."kinda, I think". I'm not competely familiar with interworkings of that big move by Soros. But my guess is he caught them in an illiquid position and was able to squeeze them collapsing the derivitives and creating profit for himself. Getting squeezed in an illiquid derivitive position has been the downfall of many great investors. tl;dr Don't buy the BS that Wall Street is trying to sell you. It's just as much of a lie as the feminist/SJW/BB narrative. Simple low cost index funds such as the SP500 or Vanguard Total Stock Market Index usually beat fancy "portfolios" of exotic stocks. If I may, allow me to respectfully disagree with you. The big wall street firms work hard to engender this line of reasoning into people. Why? Because they have to. They are simply too big to offer anything other index or pseudo-index investin…

Ah yes, the lure of "free stuff". This brings back a lesson I learned from my father-in-law back in the late 80's. We would go down to their lake house and ride ATV's on all the trails. It was especially fun when the creek had flooded and the main riding area was covered in knee deep mud. We'd ride thru that mud and have a grand old time. The first year or two that we went down the lake house, we'd do the mud riding on my father in laws ATV's as he was the only one that owned ATV's. I remember h…
