We scientists are becoming increasingly aware of male-bias in disease mortality and morbidity, so that's some good news. On the other hand, attempting to communicate this male-bias and its importance to non-scientists can be difficult as a lot of people in the media either don't want to run a story about men's difficulties or they want to approach it from a "haha, men are weak" angle.

Hormones play a large role in this. Testosterone, and androgens in general, are immunosuppressive while estrogens tend to boost immune function. This results in males of any species being more susceptible to infectious disease than females. We still need more research though.
