So Thomas Hobbes, in his seminal work Leviathan ca 1650, mentions the patriarchy as a baseline for organizing “civil” society because…he’s a time traveler? Yall. Denying the existence of old power structures does not help us acknowledge the rise of new power structures. It’s not a zero sum game. Patriarchy and feminism can BOTH be power structures that are harming (particularly economically lower class) people. It’s not mutually exclusive. Just look at how both the GOP and DNC are full of greedy…

1) Yes, the prescriptive arrogance and myopic blindness your argument demonstrates does carry some resemblances to many of the public health guidelines and recommendations I’ve seen in recent years, now that you mention it. 2) I do not acknowledge that society accepts the feminist conclusion about eating disorders you cite here. I’ve had one since middle school, and I’ve literally never heard that “feminist conclusion” on them from anyone other than you, here, now. 3) If you want your work to ev…

Holy uphill battle, batman. I…well, I’m trying. I guess I need to try a little harder. Turns out (as this sub just taught me) r/prochoice literally has a rule against posting on this topic. The comments relating to it are insanely toxic. I’m appalled at how hypocritical my sisters are being on the subject of abortion. Abortion for me, but not for thee? WTAF? Re: safety nets in the US, what even most US residents don’t understand about child support is that if you are a child support recipient AN…

I can only imagine how dehumanizing it feels. Please accept my empathy. I can’t apologize on behalf of others, but I will do my best to make a positive impact in my sphere. My thanks in return. Blessings and light.

This sub just taught me this is called a “paper abortion”, and as a woman, I am in full and unreserved support of this. It should simply be called “universal reproductive rights”. This move—allowing either parent to opt out of parenthood (starting with the woman’s right to abort)—would prevent SO MUCH child abuse, including but not limited to parental alienation and child trafficking. Turns out monetizing children has dire consequences.

Wow. Just wow. My sisters have lost their fool minds. That’s some next level crazy mean girl shit. I’m honestly puzzled. I’ve never heard women in my life speak this way. Makes me wonder if it’s more of an online mean girl phenomenon, or if I’ve just had my head in the sand (I don’t actually have a big “feminist” social circle). I definitely will check out the sub. I’ve been looking for something like it, but haven’t been super impressed by r/menslib. Most folks on subs like this assume I’m suuu…

Inorite?!?! It’s absolutely bananas. That’s what happens when our politicians actively undermine our social safety nets for decades on end.

I hear what you’re saying about feminism censoring science and preventing honest studies. And I applaud your academic achievement. All my criticisms still stand, however. I just think this line of reasoning is both weak and fruitless.

Thanks! And no, I don’t. Not if we left welfare/TANF the way it is, or gods forbid even beefed up the program. What most people don’t understand is that if you’re a CS recipient and on welfare, you recieved as little as $50/mo of your child support because THE GOVERNMENT IS TAKING IT. I shit you not. So as is, the US gov’t is already literally stealing most child support from the poorest recipients. Removing CS, therefore, would barely register to the most financially disadvantaged recipients. A…

I did not know that. I’m shocked yet not at all surprised. Appreciate the fair “privilege check” (lol can I call it that here?!?)—I’m going to ruminate on this.

The only way to solve the problem of child support is to kill the whole damn program. Just shut that fucker down. Existing child support legislature in the US was designed by the Clinton admin to put the cost of welfare onto the shoulders of men. Specifically “deadbeat dads” in the “urban market” (you can guess what that’s a euphemism for) were villanized as being the cause for any financial issues the US government was having. Turns out child support has NEVER funded welfare/TANF as intended. I…

Agreed. Pop Culture Detective has some really amazing essays. Love their even tone.

I wouldn’t necessarily call what this article is doing “neuroscience”. While I appreciate the lengths the author has gone to authoritatively cite some of his scientific claims, this is a classic example of cherry picking data to support a preformed hypothesis. Much more critically to me, from an athropological POV, this essay demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of culture, the role culture plays in species (not only human), and individual variation, and it fails to grasp the scientific n…

Evolutionary biology is used to make up all sorts of pseudoscientific nonsense—I guess it was only a matter of time until someone used it to make the convoluted argument that “feminism” is a sexual orientation. This is intellectual masturbation parading as philosophical thought. Just like a lot of postmodern philosophy and academic feminist theory. I seriously don’t understand why yall seem to have zero interest in making allies, and all the interest in acting like your oppressors.

Honestly, as someone who staunchly supports men’s rights and acknowledges how damaging social constructs and legal process can be for them, and as someone who’s hung out on this sub for more than a hot minute…it’s because: a) this sub doesn’t actually demonstrate any interest in allying with other activist groups who have similar goals, b) there’s a good deal of straight up bitter/vengeful/dehumanizing sentiment—not just about toxic feminism, but also leaking into generalizations about women at …

Last I knew, Paul Elam was still taking on therapy clients. Highly recommend. He’s amazingly empathetic, and is highly informed on men’s issues. He will NOT shut you down with misandrist viewpoints. If he’s not practicing anymore, I’m sure he has referrals.

Dude. What are you even saying? You opened by saying it was extremely unlikely that there were civilizations as advanced as us in the past, specifically because there would be a plastic sediment layer/artifacts. This conclusion must by logic be based on two assumptions: not only is plastic hallmark of an advanced civilization, but one can’t have an advanced civilization without it. So…I can know that because you just said it? THIS is why I’m not gonna bother arguing, dude. Our worldviews are gal…

If we can’t agree on whether plastic makes us civilized or in fact uncivilized, it’s incredibly unlikely we’ll be able to find any common ground in our interpretations of the science available on pre-recorded history. If you’re interested in learning a bit about why I find your statement so myopic, I recommend the works of Graham Hancock or Randall Carlson.

Sure. It’s better than Joss Whedon’s pitch for “equalism”.

The fact that you think making single-use plastic packaging makes us civilized, let alone the certainty with which you make that statement, demonstrates that our perspectives on this are too far apart to find any common ground.

I should also say “so I’m pretty sure what I’m talking about” doesn’t give one a good image, in US English. It’s a catchphrase that’s associated with really domineering, often ignorant individuals. Especially on Reddit, the general rule of “show, don’t tell” should be followed. As in, demonstrate your expertise rather than simply asserting it. Otherwise it just looks like you’re projecting an insecurity by asserting the opposite. Just a tip. No judgement intended.
/r/MensRights01/07/22 06:58 PM

Perhaps. In that case, I’ll try to be more clear: your “meta-analysis” is based on, at best, a timeline of known/recorded human history. We know that humans have been alive for millions of years, which means that we only know what happened the last roughly 10,000 years out of 1-3 million years of human existence. That’s a very small ratio. AND that also assumes that the current accepted scientific conclusions about historical events, cultures, etc, are 100% correct, which we know can’t be, since…

I mean, if we’re scientifically speaking about what we can “prove”, then you don’t know that what you say is true, either—unless you have omniscient knowledge of the entirety of known and prerecorded human history. So, then, we’re both working with theories, and are simply debating their respective merit. It’s not that one of us is an idiot who doesn’t know what they’re talking about and the other is a quantifiable expert. Dude, I’m not your enemy. It’s a philosophical debate, and I am in no way…

But the thing is, at no point in my comments have I expressed support of any Marxist or socialist philosophies. You’re correct that I invoke this label, but for what—simply referencing these ideas? Truth is I’m closer to an anarcho-libertarian than anything else, but I’m not even comfortable with that label, given how little I can stand their sub here on Reddit. It’s just hilariously ironic. I get silenced on other subs for defending this sub, and on this sub I get labeled a naive socialist for …

I…guess you and I don’t agree about western civilization being the pinnacle of human society. I find the comparison to 100 years ago to be a borderline strawman argument, given that humans have existed on this planet for millions of years and we’re still scratching our heads about Gobekli Tepe. But that’s a separate rabbit hole, and I certainly don’t want to start a patriarchy v hypothetical ancient matriarchy debate. Again, if we dig into it, the foundational principle of patriarchy in antiquit…

No, but it was used by economists and governing figures long before that. I don’t think it’s disappeared at all, but I also think the real patriarchy—the one Hobbes promotes—has always been more about class oppression than gender. Again: white, LANDOWNING men are the chosen leaders in the patriarchy the US was founded on. And that, imo, is why the modern patriarchy is so dangerous to men; with such sweeping class inequity, there are more economically disadvantaged men than ever, whom the patriar…

Yes. But…modern feminism developing its own “patriarchy theory” based on Marxist principles doesn’t preclude the existence of patriarchy as a model for society long before that. So I suppose it would be appropriate to amend my opening statement to “yes, but before that it was…” I’m aware of VAWA and the Duluth model, and I support neither. They’re actually some of the most problematic aspects of modern feminism, imo.

It’s actually not. Zero snottiness implied here, just facts I found recently and feel are highly relevant to this discussion: “the patriarchy” is a concept discussed as early as (possibly earlier) Thomas Hobbes, one of the founding fathers of modern day free market economics and governmental practices. Hobbes—the same dude who insists that human society without the rule of law would be “nasty, brutish, and short”—discusses and references the “patriarchy” at length in his seminal work “Leviathan”…
