Depends on the relationship. I'm a writer, and part of writing is understanding humans, coming up with realistic characters, and exploring relationships. I take what I know from my interactions and apply them to my writing. Sure, I could go lock myself in a room, but that wouldn't be very inspiring.

I disagree so much it hurts. As a 100% freelancer, I work way fewer hours than I did when I worked for a corporation. I don't have to commute. I don't have to buy lunch out. I work a couple hours a day, turn in a project, invoice for it, and move on. Steak and broccoli or Brussels sprouts. Easy. To be more clear, pick a protein (beef / poultry / fish), cook it up with a healthy fat (whole butter, coconut oil, olive oil), steam some veggies (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, etc), and enjoy with some cheap whiskey. I basically manipulated her into agreeing to an out-of-court settlement. I acted like she was winning, that I was a broken fool without her. It made her feel like she was winning. Meanwhile, I was keeping her greedy ass away from lawyers. If the maintenance was court ordered, she would get the state-sanctioned formula for maintenance, which would have hit me a LOT harder than what we agreed to out of court. It can be done.
