Very strongly disagree, a first date has an extremely simple purpose which is very easy to carry out, just talk and get to know each other. All you need is a setting to talk. You're two strangers, you can easily talk. You don't need frills or experiences or activities. Some women ask for that and I associate them with girls who look for high income chumps who give out free dinners and entertainment.

Fair enough, maybe my standards are too harsh for thinking I'm unwanted and imposing on them. How do you judge when to bail from disinterest? Should I just keep going until they make a direct statement to me?

Expecting them to "keep the conversation going" is one thing, but expecting them to barely make an effort at participating is another. Isn't the latter fair to expect? Is there actually no minimum effort from them that says "they aren't interested"? Should I just keep going all the time always up to what ... 5 opening topics, 10 opening topics? A one sided convo has to end somewhere. How do you judge when to bail from disinterest?

Nope I'm here in the US. Ah, ok so you would have kept going with small talk in that situation. I just feel so bad and nervous about imposing on them that I always second guess whether they actually want me there. Not sure how to get past that feeling.
