This part was so infuriating. I feel like we are so short on quality teachers that it just baffles the mind to belittle a person who is seemingly compassionate and empathic and would probably be good at their job.

It's interesting. I moved from Canada to Korea. Back in Canada, I was a psych major, and I often heard about how oppressed women in Canada were. Then I moved here to a country where there is far less equity between the sexes. That's the thing with studying a subject. No study will perfectly capture the real world number. There a variety of methods to try to get as close to the real number as possible, but it's really really difficult. Beyond that, a subject like rape which many people define in different ways is even harder to capture with a study. /u/groundr has given plenty of evidence as to why he/she thinks this is a decent study. The only evidence you have offered is your gut feelings and a misinterpretation of what is being said. I think if we hope to make any change, we need to think critically about what is being presented. I am glad you aren't just instantly convinced by the results of a study, but I also think that when it comes to defending men's rights, there are some hard truths we need to accept about the behavior of some men…

I think it's a decent idea to have someone as a consultant who understands the various harmful presentations of both men and women in media. I thought the women were portrayed well in the movie. I don't know how much influence Ensler had in the movie, but I really enjoyed Theron's character.

That perfectly covers what I was thinking as I read this. Feminism has spent so long blaming men for all of women's problems that many feminists can't fathom a social movement that doesn't use a group of people as a scapegoat for the issues they face. This view is so dangerously reductive. Men do not act as one hive mind. The presence of privilege or the ability to oppress has less to do with what exists between your legs than other factors.

It's in the rules, but the organizers can keep the topics somewhat hidden from TED if they would like. The only leverage TED has in preventing such talks is that they will not renew the license they next time you apply if you do something so horrifically controversial that it attracts a lot of negative press. Given how many people invest in the view of rape culture, it's unsurprising that this would not be thought of as controversial. So unfortunate.

I was on the organizing committee of a TEDx event. TED has little to know knowledge of what the talks are going to be prior to the conference. How can they do that? Are they saying that rape is only penetration of the victim? Even if that were so, two men having sex can be penetrative, so a man could be the victim there as well. Or are they just pretending gay people don't exist? I'm genuinely curious about this. It seems odd/terrible.

Thanks guys, I needed to hear this. I had to sit through a presentation at work today, as it was the anniversary of the Montreal massacre, about how men are always the perpetrator and females are always the victim when it comes to domestic violence. It's nice to see that my wishes for a discussion about stopping all partner violence rather than just the violence aimed towards women was not a wish that I alone had. Thanks.
