The only demographic that is a net contribution in terms of taxes are white men. Every other demographic is a net drain. That tells me that the economy is not doing better. Pretty big non sequitur here. Women say this because they have spent the last 50 years supporting legislation that is designed to pass their accountability off on to men. It is a byproduct of female hypergamy and solipsism. This one's a keeper. Love it, chef's kiss. Politics is not better because women supported some legislat…

We can definitely have this conversation, I love it, let's jump in. But let's just get the ground rules clear first. What are we comparing today to? 3800 BC, 660BC, 1279, 1789, 1926, 1992? Because otherwise, you know we'll just talk over each other. Have you tried to look around outside your own head an narrow vision to seek for trends and objective metrics? Yes, I have. We'll get into that, no worries))

Economically we're doing incredibly better. Politically probably better. Socially and culturally seems to be more subjective, but to me it seems much better as well. outside China I think you have no idea what's going on in China. We have so far riding the ups from WW2 down the crater of modernism. Or history apparently.

Think of it more like when you get approached by a salesman or advertised to. Some people are receptive, some never are, and for some it depends on the product or presentation. Some people are great salesmen, others just aren't. That's fine too.

Mine is too, more or less. Mine is also quite a bit more segregated than São Paulo, but I don't think you care about things outside this bubble. you don't now what your talking about when it comes to American demographics Yes I do. But it's not the topic at hand.

The fraction of America we're talking about is a tiny fraction of the world. It would be a mistake to narrowly focus just on this little bubble. America is a better test case than brazil by far. No, not all of Brazil, but specifically Southern and Southeastern Brazil, and São Paulo in particular is much better because of the differences in its history with slavery and the lack of Jim Crow and a different pattern of internal migration after manumission than the Great Migration. Plus of course imm…

Parts of America for sure. But even those parts, in my experience, have less competition than you'd think, because of how (self-)segregating society is. But outside of America, you are not seeing significant interracial competition in Delhi, Osaka, Istanbul, Moscow, Jakarta, Kinshasa etc. If I had to guess, honestly, São Paulo is probably the best case study for something like this. I think it'd be fascinating and very telling to see the results there. Also Singapore, because of the government f…

Lives used to be worse for everyone, therefore dating is the worst now? I really can't follow the logic for this one.

It's apples to oranges. Women and men are not in competition. They're complementary. Wanting them to be equal is like a business complaining about how good customers have it.

I think your assessment/assumption of what conservatism and liberalism are is incorrect, both in terms of economics and mating. On a side note, I've heard sex was amazing in the Eastern Bloc countries, and I wonder how good it is in Afghanistan today.

Maybe they just think they're cringey, as I do. For the record, I think all of these are completely ethical and I've also engaged in most of these, with mostly positive experiences. And I still think they're cringe.

I think you can choose either. It's like a company knowing its identity and market segmentation. Niche might also have less competition as well.

If the prices are high, it's because the markets have set them high. If the price of gold is $3600 an oz, or the price of a prostitute in NYC is $300/hr, it's because the market has set those prices. It's the price suppliers will charge that buyers will be willing to pay after shopping around.

Turns out a well dressed unattractive dude is still an unattractive dude. But a well dressed average dude is moderately more attractive. Dressing well is probably the last thing to improve if you want to be more attractive. Getting in shape is like 100 times more effective. Maybe more effective, but less efficient. Much easier to dress well than to get in shape, which is exacerbated through diminishing returns. (Obviously we should be doing both as they're not mutually exclusive.)

I think it's a cultural thing. Menswear is, generally, more expensive but it's designed to have fewer and higher quality pieces. Which, as a man, I prefer any day to women's need for trends and endless seasonal variations, all the while their quality is quite poor. The problem (speaking for American men, but catching up with the rest of the developed world) is that we're conditioned more and more to buy cheaper, low quality clothing. Our culture, and our fathers, have taught us less and less abo…

Look brother I don’t give an actual fuck what you do with your life or what you care about. I personally am not going to associate with people who are this checked out of their own life, and since I am an adult with agency, I get to decide exactly who I want around me. Yeah, I'm a very political person, and I don't think I've ever met anyone (irl anyway) who has my level of interest. And I've seen the other side too. I used to live in Ukraine, and the 90's in the ex-Soviet Union really disillusioned a lot of people, and the corruption and dysfunction made people throw their hands up at anything political. When the first round of the war started, there were a lot of people who weren't into it, who just wanted peace but cared nothing for the two sides. We're Ame…

I get it, but there are a lot more things that "affect people's livelihood" than people have the ability to care about. The civil war, earthquake and genocide happening in Myanmar is causing a huge amount of human suffering - but I'm not dumping my girlfriend because she doesn't have that on her radar.

I get it, and everyone gets their preferences. But I would think the starting point is with the political philosophers you read and the way you engage with them. Maybe economic theory too. Political party seems (at least to me) like an insignificant starting point.

Honestly, I'd rather someone be apolitical than only be slightly informed and have strong political beliefs. It takes a lot of effort and study to know what's going on, and the number of people who know peanuts about a subject and then hold strong (incorrect) beliefs makes me shake my head. In fact, they're the reason disastrous populists like Trump get elected.

“I don’t care about that it’s just politics”…about the Civil Rights Act Replace Civil Rights Act with the Sudanese Civil War, Chicago Transit Authority funding (for Chicagoans like me), the next FOMC meeting. Let's put it in perspective - would you judge people who didn't know about the city's transportation funding, the current federal funds rate or the Sudanese Civil War? Those issues are just as important and screwed up as anything going on in Capitol Hill. Also anyone in the US claiming "I'm not political" in this climate is either oblivious or lying about their affiliation. Immediate no. I find that attitude quite extreme, and shows the narrow perspective we see the world nowadays. There are plenty of decent, normal people who are apolitical in the US today. It's fine if they're not compatible with you, but to call them oblivious or liars is over the top.

Claiming you don't have a side implies you have no operating assumptions and no bias at all, which is an objectively false statement You can watch the Champion's League Final this weekend, have biases, and still support neither PSG nor Inter. On top of that, you can choose not to watch the match. pseudointellectual bullshit None of the above. You would need to redress this false viewpoint before we can continue to discuss this issue. I have no interest in being combative. This is not a contest.

Maybe that's true, and maybe Shakespeare wasn't really Shakespeare, Gabriel came down to Muhammed in a cave, and the Cubans killed Kennedy and the narcos killed Pedro Infante or whatever. Feel free to proselytize, you might be right, but I don't know how effective a message it is for most of us.

I can't imagine the data being anywhere close to being sufficient to telling the story one way or the other (yet). It's not like economics where we have everyone's transactions and bank accounts and interest and tax returns etc. And even then, we have difficulty understanding why the Japanese economy is the way it is for example. The data on social media gives us a tiny glimpse that requires a lot hypothesizing and is very prone to be used as confirmation bias one way or the other.
/r/PurplePillDebate23/05/25 07:26 PM

I think that's the problem with all of this, and I'm not saying anyone's right or wrong. It's just so anecdotal. At least with a social science like economics, we have an overwhelming amount of data. We don't have anything close to that for romantic relationships. People will argue over their own limited anecdotal experiences forever.

No, your original point was that women do not genuinely love only a small minority of exceptional men, because most married men are not exceptional That was someone else. you're not even denying that most men live in loveless relationships I highly doubt it's as you describe, but that's not a topic I'm interested in. If you want to play semantics and call that settling That's kind of the whole point we're debating here. I'm saying everyone settles. Life is unfair. You don't get the life you fantasize, both men and women. It's not a disney movie.

Women can get what they want in terms of sex, but not in terms of commitment Exactly I've overexplained it repeatedly already, and still you're being disingenuous by acting as if you don't get it No, you are saying that women can't get what they want, and therefore they settle, but men can't get what they want, but do not settle. You're all over the place, and you simultaneously think that women can get what they want, and can't. Listen, when you become an adult, you realize that nobody gets what they want, and everyone settles. But that's okay, because the fantasies we had of life as teenagers were never realistic, and real life can be as good as you make it. Until we all die of course, every last one of us. Neither gets what they want. Isn't that your definition of settling? Don't men settle for not getting what they want, the same as a woman? Right, both genders are settling, in your definition, in this case. Neither can get what it wants. I once got an internship to my dream career and company. They didn't take me. Did I settle? What about the person who didn't even get the internship?

The majority of men do not settle, because the majority of men were never even in a position where they could gotten what they truly wanted Same with women, right? Right, but you implied they could, here: Settling implies that you could've done better. The majority of men do not settle, because the majority of men were never even in a position where they could gotten what they truly wanted Only women settle Because even below average women, both before, during, and after their settling, get proposals from above average men"

>Because even below average women, both before, during, and after their settling, get proposals from above average men So if women could marry a "better" man, but choose the "lesser" man, that doesn't seem to be settling, right? You're implying that women are "in a position where they could gotten what they truly wanted", while men aren't. So why aren't they marrying those better men?

I guess that might be true, but don't almost all adults kind of settle in everything in life? Whether it's that dream career, body, apartment, lifestyle, friend group or partner. The fantasy TV show/music video that you envisioned your life when you were 16 mostly never materializes. And yet, that doesn't mean you don't mature either. Genuine happiness isn't super rare for those who "settle". Of course, we all age and eventually have to face our own mortality. I mean, talk about settling... ever…

The highest median household income county in the US is 146K, here. Quick search told me the median income in the highest income country was Luxembourg at 58K euros individually. I don't necessarily want you to give away where you live, but I have a hard time imagining anywhere in the world gets close to 175K individually at like the 40th percentile. Could you look it up and confirm what your local median income is?
/r/PurplePillDebate19/11/24 05:13 AM

I don't know how accurate this is, but here it says Manhattan has a median household income of 75K, while 175K would be a percentile in the 70's, per household. Not to mention the vast majority of high earners are older, which would matter in this context. I make about 75K (70th percentile) individually in a moderately high COL area. I'm pretty well off, and thankful for my fortune.

The scientific method has reproducibility, falsifiability, an open worldwide community, reliance on established expertise, measuring control groups with experiments, empiricism, a much more open view of data and statistical modeling, a focus not on finding truth but eliminating doubt, a long historical tradition of rationalism, less dogmatism, and perhaps most importantly, the willingness to admit that an idea is wrong or to admit ignorance. Again, I have not suggested science is better than the…

I really hope that me claiming you don't speak Spanish has offended you and you're lashing out or something. It's perfectly fine not to speak a language! My Ukrainian is at the same level as your Spanish, it's not a big deal at all! I find it distracts from the main topic of the conversation at hand, so let's get back to it. I think (can't be sure) that you're overestimating your Spanish ability. It's not just a few mistakes here or there, it's... "estoy no perfecto." You gotta understand, that'…
/r/PurplePillDebate10/03/24 05:44 AM

Yes, and I'm saying the standard is higher than that. Your grammar can't be so bad as to write "Estoy no perfecto". I can get by in Ukrainian. I can hold a conversation. But I would never say I spoke it like on a CV or something. Don't you agree that comprehension isn't enough? I gave the example that bodega guy. I mean, I also can play a few chords on the ukulele, but I'd never say I can play the ukulele, right?

That's not the error I was referring to. Much more basic one. Again this is literally higher expectations of natives themselves Not sure what you mean with that. No, once again, I have fairly reasonable standards. My father forgot the word for socks the other day - still fine with saying he speaks English. But the cashier at the bodega down the street who doesn't know how to form a sentence and points and says one or two words at a time? He doesn't speak it, sorry. We can still communicate, he s…

Yeah, I really don't have very high expectations but... estoy no perfecto? I don't have high standards. My parents are immigrants and their English is pretty shit - my dad's barely B1. And my Spanish is pretty meh myself. But estoy no perfecto? Ehhh

Yes, but when he delivered that speech, he wouldn't have made extremely basic grammar mistakes. Writing is definitely a skill that needs to be learned. Syntax and word choice and organization and all that. You can be unable to spell or use text abbreviations, or you might not know how to compose a proper letter - no problem. But writing something like "hungry me no" instead of "I'm not hungry" - that's just indicative of not knowing basic grammar.

I agree that a lot of people way overestimate their abilities. But to be fair, there's never been a consensus on what level defines "speaking" the language. It's certainly not a C2 certification or that level. I'm a language learning nerd, and personally a B2 is good enough to say you speak it, but even that's pretty far from good.

Dude, it's pretty bad. It's a stretch to say you speak Spanish

Yes, the average age is getting later (in America, which doesn't account for the other 95% of the world). Good data! But there's still quite a jump to "Marriage is dead. We live in the age of the harem." You're missing about ten steps here. Correct, conventional wisdom matters. But this isn't conventional wisdom. This is a new hypothesis. You are putting out an untested conjecture, and most important, it is against the grain. That's why you need higher standards for yourself. Don't be afraid to …

Cool, so that set of women who are off the market could be huge, or could be tiny, right? Not sure if most dating occurs on dating apps. Don't know though, can't prove it. doesn't mean it doesn't exist Sure. Doesn't mean the rest of us should believe it, though, right? And that would just mean my anecdotal experience and those people I know is just as valid as yours, right? You can believe this hypothesis, in Islam, in the deep state, in the mafia asassinating Kennedy, or whatever. And you may b…

Got it. So if you want us to change your mind, what type of evidence would you need? Would my experience and peopIe I know in real life matter?

Did... we limit this to the West...? Reading your post, not seeing that. Any other parameters we should know about?

Yeah I always figured that if this were true, everybody's father is a beta and every mother is cheating with an alpha, but no alpha ever has children.

Only in certain countries. In probably the majority of the world, this is untrue.

No matter what, at the end of the day it's a hypothesis. Not the truth, just a hypothesis. So think about ways to test this hypothesis. Think of all the men and women you know, from family members to coworkers, and find out if they really conform to this hypothesis. The key is not to make conclusions just based on conjecture.

Okay, then if that were "self-evidently true" (another way of saying anecdotally), then the size of the two groups is in contention, right? If the ratio were 95/5, then nobody cares, if it's 5/95 it's societal collapse stuff. On top of that, there will be women in the second group who didn't sleep around for a full decade, right? So we have to find the ratio of that. But obviously there's no way you or I can tell, without rigorous statistical analysis, what that percentage is. Just anecdotal evi…

The end result is quite different, in that older harems involved a rich man financially taking care of all the needs of the women. Also, the classic harem that we imagine, of the Ottoman variety, is very different from porn fantasies. There was the "Sultanate of Women" for a reason, and the dominant woman in said harem was the Queen Mother.

I think this would need some sort of detailed statistics to back it up, and certainly not just from online dating. I guess it might be true, but it just doesn't ring true in real life. Anecdotally sure, but actually walking down the street and looking at every woman, I highly doubt it. Think about all the women you know in real life, from family to coworkers to friends to the cashier ar the 7/11. You really think they're all casually dating for a decade?

Coming as a business analyst - this going to definitely need a good deal of numbers to back it up. I wouldn't make any decisions based on something this important on just speculation.

Most developing countries don't have to deal with war, especially not general war.
