The type of relationships that you can enter with children are limited, someone for example might not like children, the caregiver in that case would be barred from entering that relationship. The argument for child support in this case would really hinge on whether the laws saw a fair distribution of money, how much you get payed etc. Provided that child support were fair the caregiver would still have more difficulty forming new relationships. If you take care of children you have less time to spend meeting new friends, forming an identity other than caregiver or creating a new family. All this is saying is that the norm in society is for women to receive custody, and that taking care of children allows you less free time.
