You have my upvote on this. I stick around here to remind myself of certain rules, like "Never raise another man's child." But go your own way means that you should probably go somewhere you want to go, not dwell on where you don't want to go.

Buying a house is a good inflation hedge. If you lock yourself into a 30 year mortgage then your payment will stay constant. Assuming your wages go up with inflation the house is now cheaper as a percent of your wages, whereas rent will stay fairly constant as a percent of your wages. I also took a lot of comfort that I owned a house outright during the 2009 recession when times were tough. This theory makes a lot of assumptions....all my houses have not been good investments by traditional mean…

I have found feeding people is the most satisfactory use for my extra money. Food banks tend to be run very efficiently and thus a large percentage of the money goes to good use. I have also donated to a local boy scout troop. My donation matches a scouts fundraising activities dollar for dollar, essentially doubles their personal summer camp fund. I do not donate to organizations where the funds pay for the leadership to buy BMWs.
