Well I probably wouldn't have opened with "find anything to do over fall break?", a simple "hey" or "sup" usually suffices. Once she recognized who I am, I would have changed subject to meeting up, not making small talk. Depends on what you want though. If you want girls to hook up with, don't do small talk, just arrange when you're meeting up. Relationship mindset? Small talk is okay, but be flirty. Like, if I asked her if she hung out at the dorm I live at then I'd say something like, "huh, haven't seen you round here much. We should fix that ;)". Gets your message across. If she doesn't respond, whatever. I've found that jokes are better done in person, and once you get to know the person then you know what kinds of jokes work in text and whatnot. Be willing to help and don't let anything get you down. As for starting with a strong presence, make sure you've read up on whatever you need to (especially if it's a specific unit), and just keep an open mind as you stay positive and keep your frame.
