I would imagine it's a very dangerous role to have. It should come with hazard pay. I guess this depends on where you live. In Canada as soon as the doctor deems the patient able to make their own decisions they are able to make their own decisions. So, for example, I was able to start making my own decisions surrounding my health around the age of 10-12. This includes the right to refuse life saving treatments and surgeries.

The only condition I can think of that MIGHT require circumcision is phimosis. Even then, if you get a knowledgable doctor, rather than one who jumps right to circumcision, the problem can be rememedied the large majority of the time with steriod creams and stretching exercises. So, there really isn't a good reason to have it done anymore. You might want to try to argue that circumcision in Africa helps to reduce the spread of HIV, but the decrease isn't terribly signifigant.

A doctor NEEDS my permission to touch my genitals as soon as I am old enough to understand consent. Otherwise it would be the parents giving consent when too young to consent themselves. The only thing I would have done differently in your situation is I would have not mentioned anything related to ones junk to the nurse. I do this for a couple of reasons, the first being that I really don't think it's any of the nurse's business, and I can just as quickly state my concerns to my doctor. There is no need to repeat what I told the nurse to the doctor. It is better that I re-explain my issues to the doctor so that all my needs are met.

I really think it comes down to the concept of "my body, my choice." I can do whatever I want with my body, because it is mine. No one else should be allowed to make unnecessary changes to my body unless I consent. This concept is largely respected in our society, at least in Canada, except for infant circumcision. Family Physicians can't even make direct referrals to mental health here, you basically self refer and then tell them everything your doctor already knows and then they might set you up with some sort of help, probably in the form of group therapy ran by someone with a certificate in counseling.
