Staying for the kids is not cowardice. You should read the statistics on what divorce does with kids. I never flew regional part 121, so that may be a common practice, to weight pax and carry-on when it's close. At the airline I work for, we never second guess that fat passenger not weighing 78 kg.

Pilot here, we use average weights for the passenger and carryon. This is all quite legal and safe, even if close max takeoff weight. There is a safety margin built in to cater for discrepancies like this. You just can't weight all the people. All the he/she was a hero crap, I can't stand either...if you're about to die, you really don't give a crap about anything else.
