This is good advice if you're really going to try to move out of the friendzone. I just had this problem and did the exact scenario of saying I liked her more to see if she felt the same way. She completely stonewalled me after that. Definitely never try to casually say you like someone like that because there is a very good chance you're only seeing what you want to see in regards to what the girl is thinking. I learned that lesson the very hard way.

I'll be honest. If you like him, be direct and go ahead and either be rejected or validated. Guy's won't typically play games or be dishonest with their feelings. If it's a rejection, don't take it to heart. Make a list of things you didn't actually like about the guy and use that to reinforce the results as a positive for you. Relationships in Japan are a lot less bold, so she was probably shy. OP should be looking for gaijin hunters if he wants an easier time meeting a girl there. They specifically want to date foreigners.
