I hear ya, but your missing a key part of this.. after taxation that income looks a lot smaller. So that additional income number is wayyyy smaller. If the guy is in sales for example, let’s say 75k base, his additional income of 45k is taxed at almost 50%, so his overall take home on variable comp is 22k, with after tax base income of perhaps 50k, total of 77k or so all together. I would like to second the suggestion of index funds. They basically trend with the overall market, and aren't picked by "experts" like managed mutual funds, who charge an assload of fees and don't particularly perform well by any comparison. Look into Vangard index funds. With 25k, you could invest in the large/medium cap index funds they have. Lowest fee structure out there. I am not an expert, but I have a shit ton of savings, and the people who handle my money for me take advantage of index …
