Gentlemen, start with the lawyer, and once the boundaries are established you may be as generous as you want to be. But do NOT trust handshake/verbal deals. Per my mother, who was divorced twice: "When you get divorced, your best friend becomes your worst enemy, and like all best friends, they know your weaknesses."

Agreed. In some states, inheritance is NOT considered community property UNLESS it's been commingled with community property. Talk to an estate lawyer in addition to a divorce lawyer, as an estate lawyer will be able to explain/handle setting things up for you.

I followed this pretty much step-by-step and it's been working so far. My ex wants to be 'friends' but I've kept it as cordial/civil, with minimal contact. My mother was divorced twice (third one took, married for 40 years now, for those who want a happy ending) and she told me when I talked with her, "When you file for divorce your best friend becomes your worst enemy. And they know everything about you." Take OP's advice.

I would add that it's time to dig into some other experiences. Happiness is a choice to a large degree ~ hobbies are one way to get out, meet people and enjoy yourself. Many are not expensive, and easy to find groups. Maybe OP can try something new, or find groups that do something he's enjoyed in the past. I've lived on 3 continents, including California. Every place and people have their own great and not-so-great aspects. OP ~ Choose life. Get out there. Enjoy yourself on your own terms, and …

I agree with your take ~ given what OP offered here, I think couples counseling would be a good first step unless he's really done ~ and that isn't the feel of this post to me. OP, don't give up. Communication is the first step to bringing a smoldering ember back to a full flame. It's also possible that you'll find out she feels the same way, and you guys can go your separate ways gracefully and with appreciation for who you were and what you had while still acknowledging a happier future lies o…

One close friend that I had lunch with when I got to the end of my rope. He said a lot of great stuff, and asked some excellent insightful questions. When we were done, he looked at me and said, "You need a lawyer and timeline." Met him today to tell him I followed through. Guy is gold in every way. I have had very few friends, though lots of acquaintances/companions. The real ones stand by one, but tell you the truth.

In the end, you'll always be happier if you're NOT with someone who is unhappy with you. Doesn't matter why; better to move on and find someone who wants to be with you. And make sure the first person who wants to be with you is YOU.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
