I am glad to hear you checked - most people don't know to do that and just assume the dr/clinic knows best.

Most people who get tested for "everything" don't actually get tested for herpes. So even doing everything "right" before becoming intimate is no guarantee against herpes.

Even without an active sore they can transmit their oral herpes to a partners genitals via oral sex.

HPV and she can almost kiss any chance of having healthy children goodbye. huh? You do know that 80% of the population will get HPV at one point or another right?

Two things: HPV is not herpes, HPV is warts and 80% of the population will get HPV at one point in their life. Herpes is also super common - 2/3 of the population has herpes in some form or another.

I'm HSV free and I intend to die HSV free. Unless you have been specifically tested for HSV you don't know for sure you are HSV free.

The majority of the whole world is already infected with HSV - most just don't realize it. For most it is even less of an issue than the common cold. Worldwide - 2/3 under age 50 have HSV 1, 11% have HSV 2. http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs400/en/ In the US - 48% under age 50 have HSV 1, 12% have HSV 2. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db304.htm And for those who say HSV 1 does not count, it should be pointed out that genital herpes is caused equally by both HSV 1 and HSV …

Definitely genital HSV is less common than oral HSV. I would assume because kissing is still the main way herpes is transmitted. Way more people kiss than have oral/genital or genital/genital contact. The WHO and the CDC both mention that HSV 1 is responsible for some genital herpes but they don't list the numbers.

Genital herpes is caused equally by both HSV 1 (via oral sex) and HSV 2 these days - so 2/3 of the population can potentially give you genital herpes.

I have HSV 1 genitally and I have had one outbreak - ever. IMO oral herpes is much worse, since it is way more contagious and usually outbreaks more often.

so does at least 2/3 of the population

She has HSV 1 genitally - she caught it via oral sex from someone with oral herpes (cold sores) who may or may not have known they had it. Unfortunately protection for oral sex is much less common, most of what I hear is that a blow job with a condom is just not worth it.

Genital herpes is caused equally by HSV 1 (via oral sex) and HSV 2 these days - at least in industrialized countries. The distinction between location and strain is not all that relevant anymore.

Herpes and HSV are the same thing - it is HPV that a completely different virus. You don't have to be promiscuous to get HPV, pretty much everyone who has sex gets it at one point or another. GET THE VACCINE!!! About 79 million Americans are currently infected with HPV. About 14 million people become newly infected each year. HPV is so common that almost every person who is sexually-active will get HPV at some time in their life if they don’t get the HPV vaccine. https://www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/stdf…

It is a oncovirus which means it causes cancer. You are mixing up herpes (HSV) with HPV. It is HPV that is linked to cervical and throat cancers, not HSV. For the vast majority with herpes it is a non issue, there is a small minority that have a harder time with it. Saying it is dangerous is inaccurate.

If herpes is a concern to you don't have casual sex.

I understand that the stigma exists purely as a puritan measure. But saying genital HSV 1 is somehow a different beast than oral HSV 1 is not accurate. Does someone who gets oral HSV 1 from kissing a romantic partner have a worse form than someone who gets oral HSV 1 from a parent? The virus is the same no matter the method of transmission, and those with oral HSV who think they don't need to disclose since it is not an STI is probably one major reason that genital HSV is so rampant.

Not exactly - if you have an established oral infection you won't pass it to your own genitals. What you can do is pass it to a partners genitals (via oral sex) and they would then have genital herpes. But their herpes would be no different than yours.

Genital herpes is caused just as frequently by HSV 1 as it is by HSV 2. This distinction between type and location is no longer all that relevant.

The symptons are treatable, but it is still at times contagious even with no symptoms (and with treatment). I agree it is pretty normal but still many people don't want it and try to avoid it.

Upwards of 90% will get (incurable) herpes at one point in their life, it is still not considered normal.

Yeah - those pics are usually the worst case scenario. The vast majority of people with genital HSV 2 never have noticeable symptoms and usually remain undiagnosed. They can still pass it on to their partners however. The stigma around genital herpes is way overblown. Definitely try to avoid catching it, but if you do you probably won't even notice.

Meh, genital HSV 1 is actually much less of an issue than oral HSV 1. It usually only ever outbreaks once, and unlike oral HSV 1 it is not considered contagious outside of outbreaks, so it rarely gets passed on to a partner.

Yeah - oral herpes can be transmitted via oral sex to a partners genitals, causing genital herpes. In fact genital herpes is now caused equally by both HSV 1 and HSV 2 (at least in industrialized countries) and in some (younger) age groups HSV 1 is the primary cause of genital herpes.

I have genital HSV 1 - what is your take on that?
/r/WhereAreAllTheGoodMen26/11/18 09:22 PM

Yeah I saw that. I do agree that if you want to avoid herpes you really should ask partners about it, most people are not actually tested for it, so they just assume they don't have it. However your issue is more the idea you feel she put at risk before disclosing, which I do feel is a valid issue. I am not sure I agree that she put you at risk, genital HSV 2 almost never transmits genital to oral and genital HSV 1 is not really considered contagious outside of outbreaks. You are at way more ris…

Somewhere between 80 - 90% of those with HSV 2 are unaware they have it, since they either have very minor symptoms or no symptoms at all. You might want to consider being tested for it.

I am assuming it is genital herpes she has, do you know if it is HSV 1 or HSV 2? Have you ever been tested for HSV? r/herpes will have some good information for you

Almost everyone gets herpes at one point in their life, most just don't know it. The stigma is by far the worst part.

Actually that is not true - oral herpes is almost always caught from kissing. HSV 2 does not like to live orally, so even if your lips come into contact with it it is very unlikely (but not impossible) to infect. HSV 1 genitally rarely sheds, so outside of actual outbreaks it is not really considered contagious. Now catching genital herpes from oral sex is becoming much more common. About half of the new cases of genital herpes are now caused by HSV 1 (at least in developed areas).

I have genital herpes and I still have casual sex. Here is some good herpes information, the videos are not completely SFW since they are talking about herpes: https://herpesopportunity.com/downloads/herpes-opportunity-disclosure-handout.pdf https://www.westoverheights.com/herpes/the-updated-herpes-handbook/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aU4VcOQzQm0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcIl-hclrLI Good luck - and know that you are not alone. r/herpes would probably be helpful for you.

For some the attitude is that herpes and HPV are minor skin conditions (for the most part) that everyone gets, so why worry. For others it is something to be avoided. IMO people are allowed to make their own decisions on what they are willing to risk and for those that are trying to avoid herpes and HPV they should be aware of how common it is and that condoms won't always stop it. I'd be virtually guaranteed to get herpes with only a dozen or so encounters. After a dozen or so encounters (with …

The thing is condoms only cut herpes transmission by about 50%, and they are better at protecting women than men. Pretty much anyone who is into one night stands and casual sex should be resigned to getting herpes eventually.

Almost always they thank me for being honest, some have a few questions, many are already aware of herpes and have been involved with others who have had it so they understand the risks. And some say they are not prepared to take the risk.

I'm a girl but that doesn't change the fact that I need to inform my partners. Most of my partners come from an online environment, my OKCupid profile says I carry the virus that causes herpes, and I ask if they read it and if they understand the implications. That usually opens up the conversation and I take it from there. I would never wait until they are back at my place, or me at their place to disclose I would do it before hand. I have only had to do it once in person, he was getting handsy…

I have type 1 genital herpes, my initial outbreak was painful, I will probably never have another one. 80% of those with type 2 genital herpes either have no symptoms or symptoms so mild they don't notice. For the vast majority of people with herpes it really is not a big deal at all. For a small number it can be frequent, and painful and life altering.
