Kanye’s situation is not comparable, as he refuses treatment for his diagnosed and obvious illness(es). If he were a woman we would never suggest that he should be able to equally co-parent vulnerable children.

I’m a man in favor of men’s rights, but that doesn’t make me retarded enough to think that a woman poses as much of a threat to me as a man at night on the street. Pretending that statistics and patterns don’t exist is utterly absurd. Im alone in an elevator with one other person. If that other person is a woman with a briefcase, do I behave the same as if the other person is a skinhead with face tattoos? The answer is no and any other answer is self-parody at this point. Im done now, so you can…

I see now. Private citizens must refuse to engage in pattern recognition to keep themselves safe, because police profiling is bad.
/r/MensRights25/09/21 07:18 PM

Nonsense. An institution that allows profiling as a matter of policy cannot prevent negative or abusive instances of it. An institution that does not allow it can prevent those. An individual who has no power over another individual simply choosing to avoid potential danger does no harm and has nothing to do with institutions or the state whatsoever. A solo woman crossing the street to avoid a man who appears drunk at 2 AM is not bigotry, it’s common sense. I’ve been attacked and mugged in my ci…

That’s why I specified that profiling on an individual level has value, not at an institutional or state level. One individual profiling another in public does no “harm” whatsoever. Feel free to use downvoting to voice your disagreement on this comment as well.

I don’t have any problem with profiling of anyone (at an individual level) in environments where risk is present. I’ve had the “follow your gut” conversation with my wife dozens of times because she is more afraid of offending than of the physical threat, despite being menaced by a particular demographic segment many times and in harrowing situations. Women do face risk from men. Should they be profiling their co-workers or acquaintances and making assumptions about them based on race/sex/orient…

Always worth looking up data about the other charges that go along with “marijuana arrests.” Without getting into the fact that prohibition incentivizes organized crime and violence, it’s worth noting that interested parties will often refer to someone charged with concealed carry of an unregistered firearm and possession as having been arrested for “marijuana” or “drug-related” offenses. And it should surprise no one that the vast majority of people involved in organized crime/drug distribution…

I think that’s an extremely reductive take that conveniently ignores that the man was beheaded by an extremist minority in his own country. Typically when we lay the blame on a lie, the lie is about something serious - someone tells a story about a rape, or abuse, or another crime - and gets someone arrested or killed. It doesn’t usually apply to a lie about showing satirical cartoons in class and talking about free speech. When a story about a teacher talking about free speech gets him killed, …

I can’t help but think this story is being used as a way out of dealing with the far more insidious reality of this murder. The fact that she lied adds to the tragedy, but changes nothing. If her story had been true would that explain what happened after? Imagine that one man beheaded another because he’d heard a rumor that the other man wore socks and sandals, and then the biggest headlines were “Man Murdered for Sock Preference DIDN’T ACTUALLY WEAR SOCKS WITH SANDALS!” Who cares? The issue is …

It’s not so dissimilar from why there is still a multi-billion dollar industry of “low-fat” foods marketed for weight loss. For an array of erroneous reasons, proponents of circumcision have been able to promote an image of the procedure as healthy. They said that it was cleaner, that it would prevent transmission of STDs, and that it would alleviate the HIV epidemic. None of these things are actually true, of course, but now it is ingrained in the culture like the idea that sugar is better than…

The only people deserving of sympathy in this story are Hay’s children. The man continued to see these scam-artists, and even gave them his computer passwords, after they had already accused him of rape multiple times. Reading the essay is like reading masochist torture porn. The openness of Title IX to abuse and false accusations is, as always, an issue, but it is hard to regard Hay as a hapless victim.

It's strange, especially since the replacement of familial bonds with loyalty/obligations to the government has been an explicit agenda of Communist regimes. A piece like this, mainstreamed by The New Republic, really seems to validate conspiratorial thinking about subversion.

The number of comments accepting this completely invented and self-evidently false claim is ridiculous. Even the ones admitting it’s nonsense need to add long caveats about how even though it isn’t true it’s still a problem and yatta yatta. When something is an obvious lie, call it what it is.

I'm confused as to the way in which the question was "inappropriate" or, in the words of the comments here, "shit"? It seems like a cute question - hey, you're the first female coach of a major German team. Can you coach in the locker room or do you have to wait outside? It's transparently a joke, as is the answer. Edit: I have no problem with the question or the response. They are both perfectly innocent jokes and I think hers is a funny response to his.

My employer (a large company) in NYC is marking International Men's Day exclusively by hosting a panel on "Toxic Masculinity." I'm starting to lose my patience and good humor. Almost every single day there is a meeting or a presentation or a rude reference to "white men." I'm not familiar with his current positions, but you completely misrepresent the body of his work. He produced multiple documentaries in the 1990s and gave multiple speeches in which he claimed to be able to prove, along with other fools like Leuchter and Zundel, that there were no gas chambers at Auschwitz. It's not quibbling, it's not revisionism, it's denial of historical fact. I want to keep men's rights activism from overlapping with holocaust denial in the public mind. That's 'purity spira…

I want to, just one more time, ask that posters here stop linking to material by David Cole. This is all caused by the trend away from individualism and individual responsibility. Rape is not a crime committed by normal men who think it's okay. It's not a cultural or educational problem. "The fact that Trump said this guy (Kavanaugh) has been unfairly accused is increasing men's belief that men are victimized," Wilkins said. Right. Men weren't afraid of being falsely accused until Trump said it. It couldn't have been the utterly uncorroborated accusations, given the seal of approval by literally every mainstream outlet in the world and the holy "belief" anointing by at least 50% of the population.

I agree that there should be more coverage and certainly more attention paid to the fact that her sex was an indispensable PR tool before she was caught, but there has been a ton of coverage on Theranos and its fall. The problem in progressive reasoning reveals itself even in the few comments already in the thread. We are told that nothing counts as evidence against rape. Nothing. I accept that some people stay with their abusers, I do. I don't have to be able to personally relate to someone's behavior to accept the data that it does, in fact, happen. But if someone voluntarily continuing a relationship with a person after an alleged rape is not evidence against said rape, then I have no idea how any system …

I'm just amazed that in a sub devoted to men's rights, you're saying that when someone is on the other side you don't care if they're destroyed by unfounded rape accusations. Kavanaugh is not responsible for the disastrous state of American politics. I really encourage you to read some of his opinions. I know that people think that judges and justices just side with whomever they like, but judges of his caliber are not ideological the way you seem to think.

This shit is exhausting! I answered your FBI question in my post. The idea of an investigation is simply a delaying tactic. It is not an effort to get at the truth. I didn't pick him as a representation of men's issues. He is living out a mens' issue and I think that the way he has been treated demonstrates very clearly the problem with 'believing' despite a lack of evidence. I specifically said I'm not a Trump supporter or a Republican. Christ.

Every single purported "lie" has been related to drinking, not anything material to the case. The Democrats have made a deliberate effort to move the goalposts on that subject, and a full hour of yesterday's hearing was devoted to questions about whether or not Kavanaugh ever blacked out from drinking - the implication is, of course, that if there is ever a time that he cannot remember, then he himself cannot know whether he is a rapist. That's not my extrapolation, that is the direct implicatio…

There is not a single witness that has gone on record saying that such an event took place, so to say that "there's people supporting both sides" is misleading. Phrasing it as "if my job were threatened" is such a bullshit minimization. I thought that his conduct was utterly understandable and even laudable. You're right, he would have been held in contempt by a judge in a criminal court. You know what the main difference is there? This is a low-effort and lower quality post, but I am shocked at the attitude toward Kavanaugh in this sub. Kavanaugh's treatment is absolutely an issue for MRAs. Democrats repeatedly referred to 'three accusers,' 'three women,' 'three accusations,' at yesterday's hearing. Two of those accusations are flagrantly and obviously false. This is hysterical. Pretend it all happened in NY, where age of consent is 17. Then it's just a good old-fashioned case of disgusting behavior and arguable sexual predation, not statutory rape. The best thing you could say about Argento, one of the founding mothers of the 'movement,' is that she's basically a female Woody Allen (except without the lifelong love and commitment after the sex). I'm sorry, I can't see this as anything other than feminism. The education, mental health, and social service establishments are willing to acknowledge that males are full human beings in possession of every faculty that women are, but only if they agree to express their needs and desires exactly as women do. There seems to be a broad trend to expect the kind of care and consideration that used to be reserved for close friends and family. The story might be completely accurate and truthful and it might be exaggerated in the woman's favor, but we can safely assume that it ISN'T exaggerated in the man's favor. In other words, the one thing we know about the story is that it doesn't downplay his alleged wrongdoing. And even in stories like this, in which it is in the woman's interest to portray a …

Wouldn't using this contraceptive method for any length of time would foster dependence? Men who use anabolic steroids often have to take exogenous testosterone for the rest of their lives because the endocrine system is unable to return to pre-steroid function. I would never consider using something like this myself, but I'm interested to see what the plan for weaning off of the drug would be.

This is one to hold onto and show others. It is such a clear distillation of the total lack of perspective that incubates radical feminism. No mention that the vast majority of BH’s victims are men, from outright murder, torture, kidnapping, and enslavement to forcing little boys to fight and kill. In the rest of society men are exclusively tasked with fighting BH and protecting their ability to have such a debate, but to them the fundamental issue is restrictive female gender roles.

You seem to be using her hypocrisy as an opportunity to endorse the 'listen and believe' standard yourself. You may just be attempting to prove a point about the usual stridency of feminist ideologues, but it is still wrong. There is evidence, as you say. The evidence exonerates Franken of Tweeden's accusations. It is, in fact, evidence of her lie. Of course. Prohibition raises the value of trafficked goods, incentivizing organized crime and violence. But the media uses “drug-related crime” because the public has sympathy for drug addicts but will never sympathize with the murderer or stick-up man. You didn’t even use the phrase, you said that they were in prison for things that shouldn’t be illegal. That’s not accurate.

You’re falling into the “drug-related crimes” trap that the media has set for you. Check the DOJ stats. Only 14% of black men in prison in “drug-related” charges had possession or distribution as their most serious charge. The other charges? Murder, guns, armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, on and on down the list.

I am an American utterly opposed to infant circumcision, but the ACLU is in a bind when it comes to their 1st Amendment commitments. I've already said that I agree with you on the moral question. It's wrong for a teacher to have sex with a student, and she should not be allowed to resume teaching. But the way to address it is either to raise the age of consent to a post-primary school age, or to make it explicitly illegal for a teacher to have sex with a student. It is explicitly illegal in some places, but not others. Rape between consenting parties is called statutory rape because the the law has designated when consent can…

If you refuse to abide by the legal definitions of rape to continue asserting your own with absolute confidence, then it becomes difficult to have any kind of debate. I don't agree with your title, but this is a great example of the phenomenon. Feminists want mutually drunk sex to be classified as rape, but will not brook any criticism of the drunken hook-up culture at every Western university. It is as blatant a power-grab as there could be. 'We want the freedom to behave with complete and total abandon, but if something happens that we regret we want the full weight of the state at our backs.'

This really demonstrates the opportunism of the Left. Every single individual quoted in this article knows that FIRE is not exclusively committed to representing these railroaded men. It is a fantastic organization that has done great work on behalf of silenced and persecuted students trying to do nothing more than exercise their right to free speech.

I object to nearly every paragraph of this article. From the comparisons to the 1963 March on Washington to the not-so-subtle anti-white racism to almost unbelievable quotes from interviewees... “I am worrying about the way my boys will treat women when they are older. I want to make sure they not only respect women but that they fight for women as well,” he said. How awful it must be to have a father like that. And don't get me started on how confusing this march is. I've been reading up on it …

It must be nice to be able to promote an ideology and shrug off every single example of the application of that ideology as 'fake' or irrelevant. "Communism is for us not a state of affairs which is to be established, an ideal to which reality [will] have to adjust itself. We call communism the real movement which abolishes the present state of things. The conditions of this movement result from the premises now in existence." A rather funny and utopian interpretation for them to have, if you ask me. But those are the last vestiges of "sex positive" feminism dying out...the last embers. Do you think they would hail it as the unshackling of adolescent female sexuality? I don't. That's still a use of 'privilege' conforming to the academic social science appropriation of the word. There is no such thing as 'fitness privilege.' There are advantages and disadvantages to every attribute, state of being, lifestyle choice. Sometimes the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages, sometimes it is the opposite. You don't have to buy into their use of the word.

Activism to achieve what? What barriers? 1 in 5 women aren't being raped, 1 in 6 men aren't either. The only positive thing anyone can claim about these self-aggrandizing publicity stunts is that they 'raise awareness.' But you've invented the problem of which you're trying to raise awareness. If the issue you want to fix is the exclusionary definition of rape in some states, that's great. But this guitar string stunt has nothing to do with that.

I'd like to lend my meager voice to the chorus saying 'keep your hysterical exaggerations, victimhood mentality, and academic sociology language away from whatever this movement is.' Trump's comments are quite obviously vulgar and sleazy. The only thing that frustrates me about all this is the dripping sanctimony about "women" in articles like this one. We heard it in the VP debate, when Kaine said that Trump had "insulted women," but his example was when Trump called one woman a pig. As far as I know, that would be called 'incapacitated by alcohol' or 'incapacitated due to alcohol consumption' or some variant thereof. The term "incapable of giving consent" is simply a judgment call unless they can assign a specific BAC to it, like they do with drunk driving. Hollywood's obsession with prior brand recognition is really sickening, and obviously doing gender-based remakes is pandering nonsense. But this movie has a much better chance of being watchable simply because the cast is mostly made up of skilled actresses, not bad sketch comics. The real issue is that they are resorting to slapping a brand onto it instead of making an original heist thriller with a female cast.

By that definition, anyone who attempts to argue against an orthodoxy is a troll. Part of the reason I disagree with the whole concept of 'rape culture' is that I view sex criminals of this type as having some kind of paraphilia. The phrase "sex that you didn't want to have" is a direct quote from one of the old surveys that gave birth to the false statistic. I think that the most insidious aspect of this is the fact that the things you listed are exactly the kinds of things that people have self-reported on the surveys that led to the 1-in-4 statistic. The redefinition of 'assault' to include things like "attempted forced kissing" (try figuring that one out) or "sex that you didn't want to have" (sounds like a relationship to me) is how they slid it under the public's nose.

I actually mistyped that, Man 2 should not have been lumped in at the end. I still disagree, though. I do not think that misogyny actually factors into genitalia-based mockery at all. I think that it is a tool of the mainstream media to present women as the victims of everything, even a man being mocked for his penis.
/r/MensRights17/04/16 08:20 PM

I don't agree that it is the demonization of femininity (misogyny) that is responsible for small genitalia being stigmatized. I think saying that is just a way of making women victims by extension. Man 1 makes fun of Man 2 for having small penis, therefore Man 1 believes that Man 2 is effeminate, therefore Man 1 thinks that femininity is worthy of ridicule, therefore Man 1 is a misogynist. I think that this is ridiculous logic.

The only way - really, the only way - that this song could even be called "sexist" is if you think that wanting to have sex with women means that you hate them. You encounter this idea sometimes, when people refer casually to the "sexism" or "misogyny" of wanting to have sex with a woman without necessarily getting to know her. A one-night stand can either be a progressive, empowering act or one of sheer sexist hate depending on your gender, your orientation, and how attractive the woman is.

Honestly I'm a little dismayed by the sub's reaction here. Look up 'criminal transmission of HIV' for example. I really dislike the broadening of the term as it seems impossible to establish a boundary for legally-mandated honesty.

I accept that I'm in the minority, but I disagree. Is it rape if one party misrepresents their health status? Their religion? Their income? If you want an honest answer, I'm not sure that there is a comparable need. Even in that one author's field hockey example (which I don't believe for a second, by the way) she says that boys 'trip up' girls (From doing what? Who knows?) and that boys are also responsible for building their…

'Wives were expected' is an incredible generalization. The issue is that there were few consequences for instances of rape between a husband and wife. Expectations within a marriage varied then as much as they do today.

It might be idealism on my part, but I genuinely think it's just a political ploy. He's in a terrible situation now. For example, 90+ percent of blacks polled support Clinton over Sanders...despite the fact that Sanders is a genuine civil rights figure and has an unassailable record on those issues. Similarly, he is pro-choice. So am I. Religious Republicans are not pro-choice, so I disagree with them. I always love the assertion that what's depicted in pornography is a problem because it doesn't reflect 'real life.' First of all, everyone knows that pornography (like movies/TV) is entertainment and not real. But obviously if something you see in pornography turns you on more than anything else, you should be free to seek that out without being accused of having 'unrealistic expectations.' As much as feminists would like it, you can't control what turns you on.

I recently had a conversation with my friend's wife after she asserted that 'human history has a woman problem.' She was referring to general misogyny, which she views as ubiquitous. I said that I find it remarkable that anyone could have that view emerging, as we are, from the 20th century. It was a century of strict social/political/religious roles for both sexes, but it was uniquely the century of male death. I'm not really weighing in one way or another on the feasibility of this kind of supervision, but even the way you characterize it it's still just that. And if the system is really a lifelong commitment to distract sexual predators, that sounds rather difficult to implement.

The article was dishonest advocacy by the Times. His conviction was not vacated. The only charge/conviction that was changed was the First Degree Sexual Assault - defined by law as "forcible." This, of course, is correct both morally and under the law. The court never said that what happened wasn't rape or sexual assault. It said that it could not be first degree sexual assault.

Doesn't that actually seem like a quite reasonable position? What you quote doesn't imply that men would have to be radical feminists. I'll be completely honest. As long as the wage gap myth is presented as it is - as long as politicians lie that women make 70-80% of what men do for the "same work," I simply do not care about any underlying gender roles that may or may not be contributing to the small gap that does exist. I value individual responsibility and consequence. If women's choices, on average, result in less money, then that is just reality. The media is in full-on denial at this point, so fixated on this ridiculous narrative that it's amazing they've kept it up for as long as they have. The idea that all of society is going from day to day in fear of violence - and not just violence, but political, sexist, and racist violence - perpetrated by white men is as provably false as the wage gap myth. There was no rape victim in the case they refer to, just a slightly underage student engaging in consensual sex with someone who should know better. She should never be allowed to teach or work with minors again, but that's all IMO.
/r/MensRights13/04/15 04:44 AM

I've got no problem with this. The one consequence to a scenario like that should be the teacher losing her job and career, and I would say the same thing if the sexes were reversed.

Replace every instance of the word "victim" in the article with "accuser" and you get a clearer picture of what they're after... A means of revenge.

I'm really not excited for the next almost two years of this... Criticism that's barely even criticism (certainly not substantive in any way) followed immediately either by hedging or caveating to make sure that criticism of a presidential candidate doesn't seem sexist. Meanwhile the candidate is 1/2 of a buy-one-get-one scumbag deal who participated in one of the most corrupt presidencies in recent history. But God forbid we say any of that, that's sexist.

No one fired, censured, suspended, no pay checks docked, delayed, or denied, not even to pay for the broken windows at the frat house. And in the magazine's own words after the Columbia report, "we were too deferential to our rape victim." Because she will always be referred to as a victim even though we know better. Don't let this story go away

Not a conspiracy at all. The journalist is on record that she wanted a bold story to expose "rape culture." Even the NYT today called her "more of a casting director" in the narrative of her own advocacy. This same advocacy made its way to the halls of government. Simple.
/r/MensRights06/04/15 01:31 PM

That when the media chose to acknowledge the flaws in the case (thank heaven for the Washington Post) they shifted the blame to Rolling Stone shows just how far the rot has spread. The liar/accuser/self-styled martyr/voluntary participant in the article is above criticism because she self-identified as a victim. This makes victimhood the only identity that can be entirely self-applied and yet somehow sacred, and that is extremely dangerous. The advocates and activists have succeeded in turning v…

The drug war has decimated the black male population of the US...in fact more than decimated by definition...and caused countless men of all races to be sentenced to years behind bars for non-violent crime. These sentences condemn these non-violent offenders to physical and sexual violence. Women, on the other hand, have avoided any and all suffering as a result of the drug war. That makes it, if not an activist issue, something that demonstrates the enormous disparity in criminal sentencing.
/r/MensRights03/04/15 02:51 AM

Personally I love the fact that in the age of affirmative consent, retroactive retraction of consent, listen and believe, and ubiquitous cries of rape culture, the #1 best selling piece of fiction among women is BDSM fan fiction in which consent is not exactly driving the action.
/r/MensRights01/04/15 05:26 AM

They burned him and held at least one blade to his throat, telling him they were going to kill him...but the sentencing judge said that the attack was "designed to humiliate" the victim? I'm not entirely certain that the goal of burning someone's genitals and threatening them with death is humiliation, but I guess that helps him sleep at night.

In 2014 there were more than 25 front page articles (ranging from headlines to full cover pieces) about the lack of female CEOs in the US. Meanwhile more than 90% of workplace deaths are male. There are more than three times as many single homeless men as homeless women, etc. etc. Men are at the bottom in HUGE numbers. Women are underrepresented at the very tippy top.
/r/MensRights25/03/15 04:34 AM

What is all this hedging about the Jackie story? I thought that the truth was revealed months ago, was it not? Her "date" that she accused of initiating the gang-rape doesn't exist...he was a fake identity with whom she corresponded to make another boy jealous (using a photo of an attractive guy from her high school). Those messages have already been published. What is happening here?
/r/MensRights25/03/15 04:30 AM

Honestly...normally I abide by that principle. But a source like PrisonPlanet, whose whole ethos is based on cartoon-quality conspiracy myths like Bohemian Grove, Bilderberg, 9/11, etc. is too easily discounted by our opposition. If all of these accusations are true, what does it prove? People, especially people who seek positions of power over others, tend to be politically-minded scumbags. An egomaniacal college administrator doesn't like criticism, so tries to use the prevailing hysteria to get rid of his critic. What it proves to me is that we need to rid ourselves of the very hysteria that makes accusations like the one he proposed so dangerous.

And we already have facts and figures that illustrate this perfectly within the field of medicine. In the US we are rapidly running out of young specialists. This is because women are becoming a significant majority of med school graduates and they are MUCH more likely to become GPs for all the above reasons - less effort/continuing education, more free time, more flexible schedule, etc. We'll keep ignoring it until it bites us big time.

I'll say the same thing I said the last time this was posted. I would say the same thing if it were a male teacher and female student. 30 years of hardcore union-busting at the federal and state levels and there is almost no bargaining power for working class men anymore. 25 states are now 'right to work' states. Legalizing every immigrant, sealing the borders, and resuming domestic industry still couldn't salvage the situation.

There could not be a clearer demonstration of contempt for men. One man, three women imprison and TORTURE an innocent man. Full disclosure: I am a cynical bastard. This is just publicity-hunting nonsense. The focus on women has less than nothing to do with any alleged peace mission, incidentally a mission that is designed to fail. DPRK troops will either stop the march altogether (publicity) or channel it into a pre-approved zone (publicity for both parties).
/r/MensRights12/03/15 03:31 PM

This story has been incredibly frustrating from the very beginning and thanks to this film (which has already been promoted ("covered") by every single mainstream media outlet, Winston's reputation will never ever be clean. Neither do I, and there will be real consequences. We are already facing a specialized doctor shortage that is projected to get far worse. It's definitely a good thing to even see this mentioned in the Times, but the message is still muddled and it is a pin-drop compared to the daily articles about female disadvantage and victimization on the front pages of every mainstream news source, including the hallowed Times. First, we begin with the total misapplication of the word "violence." This is one of the most insidious changes in activist language - applying 'violence,' 'assault,' and 'aggression' as pre- and suffixes in order to neatly tuck huge swathes of behavior into criminal categories. The fact that the ad only shows male perpetrators is the least of its problems. It is based on the myth that sexual assault occurs in public and with the consent and tacit approval of other men.

I absolutely accept that I do not understand, nor can I predict, how a victim of violent crime will react or behave after the fact. Not to trot out the cliched example of 50 Shades, but the world of romantic and erotic fiction (a market for women dominated by female authors) is absolutely full of borderline non-consensual, often fully non-consensual sex. I'd say you understand the situation perfectly. Public, self-imposed burdens confer respect, credibility, and in this case a degree. Private, legal burdens are for chumps.

A Note to Students: When a woman or minority speaks, no matter how inane or stupid or simplistic or boring it is, you must not show any signs of disapproval. Actions such as rolling the eyes, sighing, or shaking the head are likely to signal that you disagree with the woman or minority, which is unacceptable. It is perfectly acceptable to express agreement by nodding, smiling, and applause, but disagreement must be hidden.

What's amazing is that the whole idea that sex must never be requested in the context of a relationship ONLY exists in this world drunk on 'rape culture.' Outside of the campus and other women's studies arenas, each party being honest about sexual needs is a sign of a healthy relationship. And it's all based on this bizarre cognitive dissonance...EVERYTHING in a relationship is an ultimatum. Your status as "dating" literally depends on you fulfilling the needs and desires of your partner. If you…

This is a fantastic encapsulation of everything that's wrong with the rape culture myth and associated ideas. Not only is what she described not rape, it is not even remotely abnormal or unhealthy. Unfortunately, being told again and again that 'you might have been raped and not even know it!' has its consequences. She had sex when she wasn't in the mood in order to make her partner happy. Welcome to relationships. And you know all those college pamphlets we've seen recently detailing all the di…

I'm a bit confused by the rush to condemn even the man's mistake. It seems to me that virtually all online communications have some kind of autofill in the contacts. If it is true that he almost immediately realized his mistake and deleted the post, I find it ridiculous that he should be charged with multiple counts of child endangerment.

I think you're both whinging and oversensitive. Calling someone crazy is dismissive, yes, and that's exactly what it is supposed to be. Emotions are not self-justifying and if someone is being crazy it's fine to call them crazy. It doesn't stigmatize mental illness at all. No one is diagnosed as "crazy." That's like saying "don't call someone stupid because that stigmatizes people with low IQ."

I often wonder what they expect these young women to do upon graduation. What if, in order to get to her OBGYN or therapist or encologist later in life, she has to walk by a gym or a karate school or a biker bar or (god forbid) a homeless man. Are we to completely reengineer our cities so that young women don't have to even glimpse anything untoward?

I've lived in NYC my whole life. Have I had people spread their legs into what I believed to be 'my space?' Of course. But over the years I have had FAR MORE negative experiences with people with bags and loosely covered beverages. Obviously calling a janitor an "Australian faggot" or another student an "African rat" is unacceptable behavior at any age. It's the word of one person that lines up almost precisely with phone records and the accounts of several witnesses. And just for the record, I think he's innocent - so your point about the complexities of justice is understood, but I don't think that's a good example.

The sisterhood will always attack anyone who doesn't tow the party line. My mother started staying home (parenting) full-time when I was about 5. It was a wonderful change and I think largely responsible for making my sister and myself the people we are today. When I got to college and I'd tell people that "my dad works at x and my mom was a stay-at-home mother," I can't even tell you the number of women who would scrunch up their little snarky faces and say things like (no exaggeration) "Didn't…

The thing that I find genuinely sad is that all of these erroneous accusations aren't 'lies.' Most of the accusers who had consensual drunk sex actually believe that they were raped. The very definition has changed for this generation of young partiers, the rot has gotten that deep. It's obviously scary and unjust, but I also find it deeply sad in that the ideological clique espousing 'rape culture' is convincing huge swathes of the population that they have been through something horribly traum…

Obviously we can't know from this video exactly what details the police uncovered and why the officer in the video has the attitude that she does. But a few things do stand out to me... "There's no doubt in my mind that you remember a lot more than what you're admitting to." "You did make a mistake that night and now you're regretting it." These are expressions of certainty, they are not questions. I say again - maybe the police uncovered evidence that the women were lying or that their stories …

Just laugh it off, no one worth caring about takes that word seriously. Like accusations of 'privilege,' it's just a way of belittling someone and disregarding their opinion. The only time I was ever accused of it was by a co-worker who thought she knew how to do my job better than I do. When I corrected her, she said "thanks for the mansplanation." I just laughed at her and moved on.

This post is offensively stupid. The high school changed the name so that they could perform this brilliant play with a cast of male and female students. None of the jurors' opinions are inherently male or female, so unless you are a sexist lunatic (like the author of the linked piece) it would have no affect on the art. Incidentally, the play has a lot to offer in the way of lessons regarding critical thinking, skepticism, apathy, and justice. It is a great play for a high school to perform.

Uh, listen shitlords, that many women are only admitting to violence because society makes them afraid to speak the truth. I understand her 'flow,' but I still disagree with the language. Again, to use black men as an example... Black men are disproportionately affected by prisons because more of them will end up in prison. Therefor as a population, blacks suffer in a manner that is exaggerated when you take into account their percentage of the population. This allows you to say "black men are disproportionately affected by prison." There is no way to make a case for "women are disproportionately affected by prison.…

Almost right off the bat we have the language problem... "...women make up just 7 percent of the prison population. Does that foster an unhealthy sub-dom culture? An abuse culture? Do you think that one 4-year old surprising another one with a squirt gun fosters a culture that normalizes facials later in life? Or do you think you might be sexualizing tiny children in a way that pathologizes normal behavior?

In fact, not much. I would guess that the old neighborhood was 30% white, 50% hispanic, 20% black. The new one is something like 40% white, 60% black. The population (white and black) tend to be immigrants, though, which also accounts for the less frequent catcalling. As a little kid I grew up in a heavily black area, but they were almost all Haitian 1st and 2nd generation and were very quiet.

I don't disagree with you, except for the phrase "crying rape." Hysterical language from our side doesn't help anything. Last winter, though, I observed the following. A black man in midtown yelled at a passing white woman "I could fuck you! Yeah, you! I could fuck you good, girl!" Do you think it's racist to condemn that? And just so you understand, I'm using such an extreme example because you (and many others on this sub) insist on characterizing catcalling as 'complimentary.'

I think it was quite fair actually. I'm probably as turned off as you are by the mere use of the phrase "male privilege," but the editorial is pretty clear that when they say "until recently" they mean pre-1990. I obviously don't have data on hand either, but I think it would be disingenuous to suggest that there weren't tremendous obstacles to women in the academy and the workplace throughout the 50s, 60s, 70s.
/r/MensRights04/11/14 04:35 PM

Just for the record, I didn't move "up" economically. I moved from a relatively poor neighborhood riddled with crime to a relatively poor neighborhood with much less crime. Both are racially diverse, though there are more Eastern Europeans in my current neighborhood and fewer hispanics. I do not think it is as simple as you suggest, but is very tied to cultural enclaves.

The single rooms should definitely all just be unisex. The craziest thing about the uni in my comment is that when they transformed the gender-specific rooms into unisex they got rid of the urinals and replaced them with as many stalls as they could fit. Of course there weren't nearly as many stalls as there were urinals, which leads to waiting. There are actual biological reasons for sex-specific bathrooms!
/r/MensRights04/11/14 12:51 AM

My girlfriend is a grad student at a major NY university. Due to student group (intersectional feminist) pressure, they got rid of gender-specific bathrooms in one of the buildings. It didn't take a whole month for women to start complaining that they had to share the bathroom with men. It has been a shit-show all around, and now they have an open bathroom on every floor and a male/female-specific bathroom on every other floor. Wonder how much money got spent on that shit.

Well that awful, right-wing site seems to define the "center" of the country (the mainstream) as straight, white, Christian, conservative. The author cites examples of the "campaign...to unite the fringes...against the center" as the Democratic strategists' focus on the so-called wage gap, war on women, etc. All that sentence means is that the author sees forthcoming Republican success as comeuppance for these tactics. The irony is tremendous, but we risk coming off as silly by taking this too seriously. Almost all mass-produced clothing (consumer goods, period) is created under similar conditions. I remember during the last pres. election the Gingrich campaign was pilloried because its t-shirts were made in Central America. That's a fair criticism, but it also makes any kind of discussion of catcalling very difficult since we are unlikely to encounter anyone discussing the practice who is himself a catcaller (who would be able to say precisely what his goals are when catcalling). I haven't seen the TYT coverage, but as a NY resident here's the thing - NO ONE has ever said "have a nice day" like that to me. Sure, I've been threatened and menaced late at night, but I don't get catcalled and nobody wishes me a nice day. This isn't a small town mainstreet. No matter the words being spoken it means the same thing. "I'm here, you're alone, and I'm looking at you." It's possible that you're not from a major city (or in particular NYC) but as a resident I can confirm to within an inch of certainty that these men were not trying to "interact and make friends." The intent is debatable but this is classic catcalling, not casual conversation.

I am strongly opposed to circumcision and wish that I could be whole again. I also wish that there were more general agreement about the immorality of circumcision. Even so, I don't think that comparing it to FGM is in anyone's interest, not even the MHRM's. FGM, when performed, is done in largely medieval conditions and is associated with high rates of infection as well as true horrors like fistulas. In terms of severity, there really is no contest. We should focus on drawing attention to the i…

What's going on is the hollowing out of the ACLU as a moral authority in this country. I am so dismayed and disgusted by so many of their recent positions and I simply fail to understand how a civil liberties organization can do what they are doing.

Believe me, I get it. A relative of mine married a Jewish man and they had a traditional bris in a non-sterile living room. Bleeding, screaming, sobbing infant, and no one could see what was wrong with it. It made me sick.

As someone who was circumcised as an infant, I don't feel that it has negatively impacted my life all that significantly. I still wish, however, that I could snap my fingers and be fully intact again, as I'll never really know what it would have been like. Can I ask why you would have gotten circumcised anyway? It seems like an odd choice to me.

This is another weird thing I see on this sub all the time. I genuinely don't see the need for "safe spaces" for either gender. I have safe spaces - my apartment, my friends' apartments, nearby parks, bars, etc. The only difference between a house and a "safe space" would be that once you walk into the safe space you say "uh...so do we like...do what we would normally do at your house, except without privacy?"

Obviously the university had to take this seriously - and they should, of course. But I don't think there's even a slight chance that it wasn't written by a supporter of sarkeesian to defame men, gamers, whoever they're going after. 99% of all these gamer conflicts transpire on twitter with complete anonymity. I'd be shocked if half of the opinions spouted by either side weren't actually coming from false flag users.

Except obviously you can't be kicked out of a university for 'accusations' of underage drinking or brawling. As far as I'm aware, rape is the only crime where a baseless accusation is grounds for expulsion.

I'm so glad that the process has been comparatively quick for Treon Harris. As far as a false accusation and suspension being a learning experience, I certainly hope that it was. I take the point about the double standard, but can we be clear in our view that we DO NOT WANT incidents like this to be treated as sexual harassment? How do you know that that is what 'false,' as listed by this article, means? In the US a case can be dropped simply for lack of evidence (as most are) because the state would be unlikely to get an indictment, not because of exculpatory evidence. I don't know about the Indian justice system, but do you have other information?
/r/MensRights04/10/14 07:41 PM

It is likely both. Whenever there is a stat this high it is usually the two categories lumped together with substantial overlap.

I agree, of course. What I meant was that a kind of accusation database would be valuable so that serial offenders could be tracked across regions. I doubt it could be implemented without substantial civil liberties infringements, but it would certainly be valuable for investigators.
/r/MensRights04/10/14 07:37 PM

I am ambivalent about this. We know that the vast majority of rapes are perpetrated by a tiny number of serial offenders. We also know that very often the evidence is not substantial enough to bring charges (these would be claims that are unfounded, but not false as OP rather hysterically calls them). Certainly robust record-keeping would allow multiple accusations by unrelated parties against one person to be cross-referenced, which would be a good step in protecting people from these animals. …

We should probably do everything by stats. It's only sensible. Obviously all males need to have curfews of some kind (I mean, we're trying to be a civilized society here) but it's not fair to make all men lose the whole night. Black men should probably be in bed with the lights out (they can read a book if they want) by 8, Hispanics by 9:30, and Whites can stay out until 10:00.

I think that we are arguing similar points on different sides of a divide, which is the preponderance standard. Multiple witness statements made as to the state of intoxication of the accuser vs. the accused claiming that consent was given. The only way to establish incapacitation in these cases are through the testimony of the accuser and witnesses. That's why I say that under this law the accused has no excuse if the accuser claims that he/she was too drunk and didn't really know what he/she w…

I think that you're wrong about it not invalidating consent. The language in the law that I included above clearly states that the accused cannot use as an excuse "He/she consented" if the accuser says "I was drunk." And when you so dramatically place periods into your sentences, you're not responding to the point that I made at all. No one is arguing that people who are blacked out, incapacitated, etc. cannot consent. Of course they can't. But the law doesn't provide any metric for when exactly…

Unfortunately, all the California law says about consent while drunk is "It shall not be a valid excuse that the accused believed that the complainant affirmatively consented to the sexual activity if the accused knew or reasonably should have known..." and then it lists conditions. /r/MensRights01/10/14 12:47 AM

Well being drunk doesn't imply consent, but yes - the law says that consent given while intoxicated is null and void. It doesn't say anything about BAC or incapacitation or memory loss or anything else, and it doesn't say what happens if both parties are equally intoxicated. It is a moral and logistical nightmare, completely unenforceable except by mass expulsions of male students.

That's just my point. I don't think that eyewitness testimony alone could ever, at least for me, establish something beyond a reasonable doubt. The entire discourse on drinking and its connection to rape can be summarized as follows. We know for a fact that a huge majority of rapes, especially on campus (the only place where people seem to care about this) involve excessive alcohol consumption. So one group says "We could avoid most of these incidents if people would continue to drink socially, but stop short somewhere south of blacking out." This is met with utter indignation from people who have been propagandized for a generation to …

Leaving aside what I'm sure is frequently biased/dishonest police testimony, knowing what we do about the utter unreliability of eyewitness testimony has made me extremely skeptical about the whole process. It's difficult because I realize that without the use of witness testimony any sort of conviction would be very difficult to get, but I would not be able to convict on that basis alone. What happened to this man is such a disgusting tragedy.

Even if that were true, that would still be completely different - as rape and sexual assault are overlapping categories but not synonymous. But it's not true anyway. Goddamn psychotic. He asks a female colleague to write a piece with him about a topic he is interested in. She completely ignores him, and he's irritated by that. RAPE CULTURE. I am terrified by how prevalent this kind of thinking has become.

And don't forget, they were stabbed to death. 4/6 victims were men. 3/6 victims were killed with a knife. The political beneficiaries of this tragedy are really trudging hard over the graves this time.

Bingo. And every sentence of his manifesto screams psychopathy. He is obsessed by every detail of every perceived slight or "betrayal." He is able to fool suspicious authority figures multiple times by telling them what they want to hear. He has no empathy whatsoever. He also denigrates blacks at some length in the manifesto, but you don't hear much about that. These kinds of killers frequently latch onto dehumanizing points of view because it suits them. Hence the language that is supposedly "m…

Correct, not exclusive. And neither are particularly relevant. He also said that he would take revenge on "all of humanity." His manifesto lays his psychopathy bare and reads very similarly to Eric Harris' journal. Perceived slights and "betrayals," unbelievable narcissism. He refers to himself as a god multiple times. His language toward either sex is such a lame distraction that the media has given us.

I seriously doubt that you have read his manifesto if that is what you came away believing. It is ridiculous to describe his motivation as hating either men or women. He was an incredibly narcissistic psychopath who had planned to kill his little brother so that he would not grow up to "surpass" his "legacy" by having sex and successful relationships. It was all about him not being the center of the universe and about his ruminating on perceived disgrace for years.

As with all other social justice-inspired language, it's a term that silences and demonizes normal people engaging in normal conversation - and that is by design. Are you a know-it-all? Are you a woman? You go girl. Are you a man? Stop hating women.

"King’s callous opinion about Farrow’s account is revealing of the kind of tightrope that victims must walk to be taken seriously — to be believed." Remember everyone, don't criticize either the style or substance of a particularly outlandish accusation.

The biggest problem in this case, and a huge problem for men in general when it comes to the justice system, is the reliance on witness identification and testimony. Here the victim herself identified an innocent man, yet we are bombarded daily with refrains of 'believe victims unquestioningly.' Eyewitnesses and even victims are incredibly unreliable and we all know it. Were I on a jury, I would have a very hard time sending someone to prison without corroborating evidence.

I'm not impressed and it seems to me that she has a penchant for hiring unprofessional women (and also one for giving in to their behavior). I have worked for and with men and women of all types in 50+ offices for extended periods as a perma-lance employee. I have seen both sexes be lazy and entitled. I have seen both take credit for others' work. The worst, most gossipy boss I have ever had was a man. Whenever he perceived an interpersonal issue he would take an individual employee into a close…

I'm very impressed by Dr. Fiamengo's ability to keep her composure; this is beyond frustrating to watch. How someone who claims to teach John Stuart Mill can so completely lack an understanding of what free speech means is beyond me.

I completely agree with you in general, but I am not convinced about this particular scene in the TV series. I will have to go back and watch again, because I don't recall Cersei relenting (I could be wrong, of course).

I do not want to see this group, or anyone for that matter, fall into the trap of black-and-white rape vs. not rape based on things like level of intoxication, aggressor status, physical strength, emotional state, etc. That should not be what we are about.

That outlier also may have been referring to the scene as depicted in the books, as many other commenters have been.

Very good article. As a man in his very late 20s, it has frustrated me to no end that almost all of my friends and colleagues would agree that the example (woman passively consents to sex after prior refusal) is in fact a rape. I try not to discuss these things because I will be ostracized, but just yesterday a male friend referred to the 'rape culture' as though it was a given. Pretty scary.

That is some seriously insidious bullshit. "Just don't do anything wrong and you have nothing to worry about." Just don't say, do, buy, research, or think the wrong thing and you'll be perfectly safe. Frankly it makes me sick.

The very short article also devotes significant space to the timing of the husband's demand. The only position I feel comfortable taking on this is "I don't know the law well enough to know what the basis for the decision was, and this article makes him sound like a sleaze."

If the court established that the agreement was signed under duress, then there is nothing wrong with the ruling.

I don't want to just chime in and complain, but I'm disappointed that the top post in this sub for most of the day is a tumlrinaction cross-post about an individual lunatic.

I respect your opinion, but having read through almost the entire thread, that's not what I see happening. In fact I see most commenters taking extra care to add things like "if it happened of course that's horrible" just to prevent backlash. It might be the way it's reported in the article, but the story is on the absurd end of the spectrum - you've got to expect some jokes and roll with it.

Resorting to crying "victim blaming" is not the path we want to take. Some of the comments in that thread are regrettable, but most are (quite reasonably) questioning the validity of the accusation. When a story smells funny, we should all be free to discuss it and those involved without fear of name-calling.

I appreciate the time and effort that he put into this, but it is written with the style of a sniveling malcontent teenager. His points could (and have) been made succinctly and in professional language.
