Taiwan has 1/15th the population, so scaled up they have 4,500 cases. Taiwan does not have friendly relations with China, so they had far less trade and travel before and during the early epidemic. Just because something is edible doesn't mean it's only usable as food. Soaps are made from mixing lye with oil- often perfectly edible oils like olive oil (castile soap). I've been following this since early January, it's real and it's much more serious than most countries are playing it to be. If you're on a hard budget, I've found that the cheapest vegetables are: Fresh carrots, I can usually get a 5 lb bag for around 3.50 USD. Dried peas- hard to properly factor the price, but they are very cost effective. Split peas are easier to re-hydrate than whole. Canned Green Beans. Usually, the larger the cans have a better price tag. Hominy- Walmart specifically has very cheap 6 lb can of hominy which is a steal.

Regardless of the outcome, going on the offense with the police was the right call.
