Hi Lauren Southern! I hope the freelance news gig is going well! /s

That's beautiful rationalization. Men are privileged and when they aren't, it's because they're assumed to be privileged, which is a privilege.

It took a lot of courage to film herself having sex and put it up on the internet. And by courage, I mean nuttiness.

I tend not to be pessimistic about the future. We're a race of evolved savannah apes that have managed to fling tin cans full of other evolved savanah apes at the moon. I think, I hope, that the ideas behind the men's rights movement, will gain traction in the public conciousness, and while we won't be rid of gynocentrism and male disposability, it will at least not be an invisible force guiding society. How much that awareness would affect "fairness" and "justice" is beyond my vision for now.

Very nice. I guess I need to go through genderratics old articles for gems like this. If so, then the solution is for women to take on more masculine responsibility, and therefore mitigate the "needs to be protected" role. Though sometimes I wonder if people will actually like that kind of world. If we change all the social sex cues, will it result in a world where men will no longer want to dress like women in the first place? Will people no longer find the opposite sex attractive? My hope is t…

The precedents that a case like this will set can affect more than Mr. Elliot. As Karen Straughan has said, anyone critical of feminists and feminism could be affected by this case.

Both Karen Straughan and Hannah Wallen have made it to the front page of Reddit via R/videos. I got a smile. :) http://www.peterfuda.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Snowball-down-mountain-small.jpg

I think it's fairly clear at this point that she's at least men's rights neutral, if not sympathetic. And she seems to want to save the conversion stories for the documentary, where they belong anyway. I'm looking forward to the film. I'm interested in how far down the rabbit hole she goes, and what her opinions on gender dymanics are past the feminism/MRA conflict.

Got kinda cringey at the end with the idea of killing the rapist. There's a lot of stuff women can do to minimize their chances of being raped without grabbing a knife and stabbing people. Not to mention that the discussion about casual sex, consent and accusations of rape over regret over a one night stand needs to happen in that context as well.

Radical MRA: A guy who makes cunt jokes. Radical Feminist: A woman declares men need to be reduced to 10% of the population. Just to put it in some perspective.

That post hit every stereotypical defense of feminism. Feminism is just about equality. Please ignore the narrative of men as oppressor and women as oppressed. Patriarchy hurts men too. Please ignore the concept of toxic masculinity. More men are CEOs, therefore patirarchy. Please ignore all the homeless men, and men who die early due to stress and demands of performance. And a No True Scotsman to end it all.
/r/MensRights26/09/15 10:40 PM

Interesting. Is this the first time she's identified as anti-feminist? I know she's been critical of feminism in the past...

I want to promote awareness of men's issues especially when their interests come into conflict with gynocentric attitudes. And the biggest culprit of gynocentric injustice in the west (IMO) is feminism.

Apex fallacy, and lack of empathy for men that is both socially and likely biologically ingrained into humanity. Women complain? Shit gets done. Men complain? They're "pissbabies"
/r/MensRights28/07/15 09:08 AM
1

I certainly haven't. I can't tell if she was sincere then or sincere now or whathefuck to think. So, whatevs. There's plenty of people talking about these issues that haven't got such a bizarre and suspicious internet history.
/r/MensRights23/07/15 05:08 AM

Is that a generalization about generalizations? I understood that Karen wasn't talking about MRAs who don't criticize feminism, because that would be a daft assumption.

Even if the equal pay thing were true, she thinks it's the most important political issue? Gun control, abortion, immigration, foreign policy, NSA, TPP... I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt and say she's engaging in hyperbole, but since we know the wage gap is bogus... Fuck you horseface.
/r/MensRights08/07/15 01:14 AM

More generally, I've tried to change my behavior and attitudes like you. I'm trying to be more warm and compassionate towards men, and more critical of women. I've also learned to question narratives, even ones that seem rational at the time, by being critical of my own possible biases, like the Apex Fallacy, and the Women are Wonderful effect.
/r/MensRights02/07/15 12:32 AM
1

I doubt it would come to open armed conflict. More likely, it will be more laws and customs placing women on their pedestals and using men's lives and wealth to protect and provide for them. This was the traditional way, after all.
/r/MensRights29/06/15 07:00 AM
1

In that case, the feminists proved mightier, in the sense that feminism was so sucessful in taking control of society. They control the narrative, and we should surrender or be crushed by the mass of white knights who accept that narrative.
/r/MensRights28/06/15 08:01 AM

Referring to the rest, I'd say that it's a standard Catch-22 argument. If men get preferential treatment, it's because women are discriminated against. And if women get preferential treatment, then it's also because women discriminated against. Exactly. They start with the conclusion and then twist the evidence to support their conclusion.
/r/MensRights28/06/15 07:57 AM
1

Viewed by whom? They have to invent some subconsious conspiracy about "Patriarchy" to "prove" that it's systemic. The general public doesn't believe women are weaker and lesser than men. That hasn't been true for a long time, and arguably may have never been true in the way that feminism claims. "Women were treated like chattel!"

If the Duluth model weren't disproven as men using DV to enforce "pariarchal roles", instead of what DV really is, poor conflict resolution skills, and learned pattern behaviour would be a good start for me. Also, a real rape culture that normalizes rape, excuses rapists and shows that our society goes easy on rapists. If femininity were really undervalued by societies in history. All those fertility statues, and chivalry and deference to female social pressure makes that idea seem willfully ign…

No fault divorce killed marriage as a family institution. People break their commitments all the time now. And there are a rising number of single mothers who were never married. I think people need to carry the idea of the family unit as a personal ideal, because the law and the government sure don't give a shit about it anymore.
/r/MensRights27/06/15 08:37 PM
3

Yep. And I honestly don't have an issue with polygamy. In thinking about where I stand on gay marriage, I came to two conclusions. 1. Ideally the government should get out of marriage altogether. Have a system where the legal rights are spelled out in a contract like a civil union, whatever. 2. I draw the line at reasonable consent between adults. That means gay marriage or polygamy are fine with me. Animals, children and inanimate objects don't make that cut. But really, marriage is just a conc…
/r/MensRights27/06/15 01:28 AM

I hope you're right. I'm pessimistic. I think the double standard will continue, as it always has. Whenever a man's interests conflict with a woman's interests, the woman will get a more favorable outcome, on average. Gay divorces will just be the more "fair" situations, since the conflict will be between the same genders.

I'm on the fence about transgender. Intersex conditions obviously do happen, and they're documented. (CAIS mentioned) But I often wonder if some transgender people are identifying as trans, but have other issues, like autogynophelia/autoandrophelia, or extreme fetishiszation of a sex. Your thoughts? PS, thanks for having this AMA. It's difficult to discuss these kinds of things in the current PC atmosphere.

Here is my productive contribution. All IMO of course. We need a public awareness program that deals with the humanity of men. That shows their vulnerability towards social systems that favor women over them. We need to raise the self-esteem of boys, stop medicating them, re-introduce recess and have a level of respect for typical boy behavior, so that young boys don't see their gender negativley. We need to encourage men to speak up about their problems, and not shame them for it. We need to ha…

Your solutions better allow for the pushback from feminists, recasting the problem as stemming from "traditional gender roles", and redirecting the conversation towards the rate of women attempting suicide. We've got 60+ years of narrative to roll back before men's issues get the attention they deserve from the mainstream of society.
/r/MensRights21/06/15 10:53 PM

Firstly, I'm sorry about all you went through there. I find you story very believeable, having known bi-polar people myself. (Never in a relationship with one, thank goodness) I think one of the big advantages that feminism has over men's rights is that women are willing to come forward and tell their stories (from their side of course) about domestic abuse. But men, for various reasons you probably already realize at this point, tend to stay silent. So feminism has many weeping women to put for…

Ignore the crazy feminists who hate men How do you think the feminist movement got so polarized in the 60's? People ignored the crazies, and left them to fester.

Crap clickbait article about Elliot Roger and Warmachine and feminist Intersectionality, and maybe some men's issues somewhere if you read the whole thing.
/r/MensRights08/06/15 05:49 AM

Hrm. Not fond of the article. It seems full of gender shaming. I really like Tom Golden's take on it. Men who do share and emote are just fine, but we should also have space for men (and women) who process their emotions differently. http://tgolden.com/helping-men-and-boys/ To sum up, I think her perception of the interaction of masculinity and culture is misguided.
/r/MensRights07/06/15 07:20 PM

Meanwhile the radical and mainstream feminists who do promote the ideas of the wage gap (what do you mean by yes?) patriarchy theory, and misogyny as the cause of men's problems are out there, in academia teaching it as truth, as article writers and as activists telling men that they are the problem. I'm sure there are some rational feminists, but unfortunatley, I don't think they have any kind of influence over the destructive narrative that most feminists espouse.

I'd like to take a shot at answering her questions that precede the video. What are you looking for? I'm looking for a way for our society to take rape accusations seriously, and not as part of some mob justice rape culture mentality. You, Emma, are now the poster child of false rape accusations, and the problems that plague our colleges regarding rape hysteria. For you own sake, get come councelling. Preferably a non-feminist therapist.

It's this blatant taunting that shows me that people like her don't care so much about "equality" as lording their power over others.

Welcome. Men's vulnerablity is one of the issues we talk about. It's hard for society to recognize that, because if men are vulnerable, then who will do all the protecting? It's kinda like when you realize your parents are failable human beings and not godlike protectors. Again, welcome.

The Expo is obiviously not only about comics, but about the culture in comics hence the panel on women in comics Exactamundo. Xenospora is (If I may say) Alison's fictional exploration of the topics that she and the HBB talk about.

What would have to occur for this kind of collaboration? A serious cleaning house of prominent feminist organizations of the misandry, man blaming and demeaning and belittling of men's lives. I see the thread has given you some good places to start. When the majority of feminists have given up on their toxic ideology, then we can talk.

Let me know when feminism, as a group, drops the bigoted and harmful ideas of patriarchy theory, and the oppression of women as a class by men as a class. Until then, I think feminism is incorrect at best, and activley harmful at worst.

So how do you propose to encourage people to care when they don't care? The MRM has been around in one form or another for decades, and nobody gives a shit if men are suffering. A particular man, maybe, but not men in general. We see it in debates where problems for men are redirected to either problems for women, or men AS problems. Calm, rational and respectful gets people like Warren Farrell called a rape apologist. Riddle me that one, Batman.

I often hear about people in the movement sharing their "red pill" moment. Much as I think that phrase is getting stale. Anyway. I was swtiched on over the Atheism Plus incident. I didn't have a woman take my kids away, or get falsely accused of rape. It is possible to get into the movement without going through some of the horrendous shit that some men faced that rubbed their noses in how terrible things have gotten. I have been pondering how to make a "red pill" or switch moment go mainstream.…

There are some real gems in the HBR shows. Alison sometimes gets on a tear and makes some great speeches. Most of the rest is just rehashing old ideas over news pieces. Rachel... I appreciate her efforts, but if I hear "The thing is" one more time... :D I think the manosphere videos have stalled because a lot of it has already been said. Yeah, I bailed after a few pages. The questions were worded so poorly that I couldn't even answer them. Edit I'd like to make this a little more constructive, without repeating any questions. MRAs are used to being taken out of context. I could answer quite a few of the questions in a way that would sound callous and "oppressive", but if I could, I would have qualified them with "But that's bad, so I don't do it."

Once the interview was done and the audio recording was switched off, the police officer told me that I shouldn't worry, and he'd seen cases like this all the time. Quoted for posterity. I don't think it should be this common, that men should have to be told "Don't worry, men are falsely accused all the time, put in jail, and put in fear for their freedom and social ostracization!" Glad to hear you made it through in more or less one piece.

I agree. If we push for compassion for men's vulnerability, and responsibility for women's actions and attitudes, it doesn't matter if it's feminists or traditionalists (probably both) who get their panties in a bunch. I think the majority of people can and probably would understand and agree with those simple ideas, if they got a fair hearing. And that's where I'm a bit more anti-feminist than anti-traditionalist. But not much. Feminists want to shut down those ideas at all costs, while trads a…

Firstly, I'm very pleased that this topic is being addressed in any big website, even a humor one like Craked. This kind of stuff was denied just a few years ago, as "Men raped by women are a tiny fraction of rapes" etc. I'm of course annoyed that they had to take a potshot at the MRM and keep yarking about the Patricarchy Boogeyman, but I consider it a small step. It makes me hopeful that feminists and their allies are being dragged, kicking and screaming, into addressing the issues that MRAs h…

I remember one particular moment some years ago walking down the street with that background nagging feeling of guilt as two attractive women came into my visual field and thinking here I go again trying not to treat them as sex objects and then just thinking this is ridiculous. Imagine a woman trying to force a man physically, and the man punches her, full force in the face. 1. Few men will resort to that kind of violence against a woman, even to defend himself, especially if she's not trying to actually damage him. (With a knife or whatever) Thus the man is at a physical disadvantage despite probably being stronger. 2. The police are called, and find a woman with a bruised and broken face, and an upset guy. Who are they going to arrest?

An argument I often hear about this topic is that "No one should be hitting anyone!" And I agree with that, but that doesn't change the fact that people do hit each other, and it's also a fact that people in general tolerate that violence from women much more than they tolerate it from men. Which leads to all kinds of wonky situations like where a woman can hit a man and then the man is arrested for DV. Until someone casts a magic spell and removes all violence from the world, we have to have a …

There's another stereotype. How do you expect meaningful interactions between feminists and MRAs if you can't show the other respect? When feminists stop asking if men are obsolete, stop claiming that rape and domestic violence are gendered issues, when they can let go of patriarchy theory and stop telling men how to be men, when and if they can do that, I'll be interested in having a meaningful interaction with feminists. Until then, they can go piss up a rope.

I think of all the issues that I've discovered since finding the MRM, male genital mutilation is the most visceral gut punch. Cutting on the genitals is something done to animals to domesticate them, and I'm sure the analogy is not lost on anyone here. Whether or not someone has registered for selective service has no real bearing on how hard it would be to draft them. which puts them in the same boat women are in. It certainly does not. We require them to sign up for selective service when they are younger. Meanwhile, we have another class of citizen who are never required to register with the state, because their gender exempts them. This is not equality.
/r/MensRights05/10/14 08:59 AM

Men who are too old to be drafted are still allowed to vote. Well off men also used to be able to avoid the draft by going to college. Neither example refutes the creation of a class of citizen who are explicitly exempt from this obligation to the state, by only their gender. Who's that? Some chick in a hamster suit.

By gaining the right to vote, without the obligation to the state, sufferagettes created a new class of citizen, one that could vote to send men to die in wars without having to face that same obligation. In the US, men still live as a seperate class of citizen who are legally owned by the state in this manner, while women are not. This is a HUGE contradiction to the idea of equality. /Hi Typhon! :)

Physical power is trivial compared to social power. We have a thread right now about a man being seriously assaulted for hitting a woman. There are multiple videos on youtube at this point showing the difference in crowd reactions to male on female violence versus female on male violence. Spoiler: In almost all incidents, people react with condemnation and sometimes violence when a man hits a woman, whereas crowds tend to either ignore female on male violence, or more often laugh at the guy, and…

I dislike feminist ideology. I have no problem with individual feminists beyond that I think they're misguided in thinking feminism is about equality. In this case, your feminist friend obviously put out a seed of a good idea. It's good that you defended that guy, but damn did you put yourself in danger. Happy men, no matter how stoic, will not kill themselves for just any ole thing. Agree. I'm really getting annoyed at the sentiment that seems to be floating around "feminism cares for men too!" circles that stoicism is the problem, and not addressing the problems that men face directly.

But at the heart of this accusation is a distinctly feminist perspective that holds social engineering superior to universal mandate. So is this movement (that many see founded on egalitarian principles) a men’s movement in the same way that feminism is a women’s movement? Perhaps feminists would like it to be so. Interesting. I do think something like that is at the heart of the accusations. The MRM isn't feminist (the tactics, not the gender), (for the most part) because we're trying to refute…

They're smelling the change in the air. I've only been following the MRM about a year, and things are already changing really quickly from what I've seen. The danger, IMO, is that with mainstream coverage comes mainstream commercializing and politicising.

It goes both ways. If I didn't do the circ and he wanted it, it would be too late for him to do it without it becoming a major medical procedure. When you're an infant, it's a much simpler procedure. Did you watch your son's circumcision?
/r/MensRights26/09/14 07:25 PM

The removal of the foreskin is bad, but I think the worst thing about circumcision is that it's a physical trauma inflicted on an infant. Being circumcised, I cannot imagine what my life would be like if it hadn't happened. Would my disposition be any different? My outlook on life? My interactions with other people? Torturing and mutilating an infant must have some kind of mental trauma.

Patriarchy, I think of the Declaration of Sentiments that blamed men instead of the state for their grievances. I think of the Duluth model of domestic violence which casts DV as class oppression. I think of the idea that men, conciously or subconciously, oppressed women. I think of the 2nd wave feminists who portrayed sexism as a class struggle in order to create an oppressor/oppressed narrative. It was a nicely worded variation on the "You're either a feminist or you're a bigot" speech that feminists have been using for some time now. That's not unity, that's the same divisive rhetoric that feminists have been using to pit people against each other.

Same with the label feminist. They poisoned the well. Of course I've had feminists tell me the MRA label has been poisioned by "misogyny". Duluth is almost becoming a cliche, because it's so easy an example of the damage that feminism has caused. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duluth_model Feminist activists have pushed a model for domestic violence that demoinzes men as violent patriarchs into our legal system. The mainstream media will never be our allies, and placating them is a sucker's game. Pointing out that Rice's fiance was the attacker in that situation was a valid observation, and highlights that society will excuse the actions of a violent woman instead of assigning her any responsibility for her actions. I do not want to undermine gender roles. I don't hate feminists. Well, some of them do annoy me. I hate feminism, which I see, at best, as a mistaken model of gender and sexism and at worst as a destructive ideology that some people use to perpetuate their own power through the abuse of gender roles. For one tiny example, see the terrible damage that the Duluth model of domestic violence has caused. P.S. Telling men what they can and cannot say is the opposite of encouraging them to express themselves.

Well said. It's the "ought" that bugs me. How do we know that stoicism isn't a general trend in men, and that society only affects how strongly that's expressed? Another tone argument. These are my current peeve. Not only have such incidents diminished the group's chance of being taken seriously as a meaningful social movement, but have tended to drown out the voices of the more moderate and pro-feminist men’s groups fighting important social issues that affect men, such as sexual abuse in prisons, child custody rights, lack of shelter for homeless men and high fatal workplace rates. I'm going to say that men have less legal rights than women. Genital mutilation (circumcision) being a glaring example of how women are protected by law, and men are not. Now, I think a lot of inequality is due to societies views of gender, dejour pointed that out very well. We see men as responsible, and so we give them responsibility, regardless of whether it's actually warranted or not. The sentencing gap is a great example of that. Overarching relationship between men and women A complex issue. Men had a lot of authority, but that authority came with responsibility to mate and family and society. Nowadays, women share that authority, but left the responsibility primarily still with men. Creating a huge power imbalance that is already having serious effects on our society. NP. :) Responsibility for women. I'm going to use the issue of sentencing disparity for this one. Women recieve, on average, something like 60% less time for similiar crimes as men. I believe the breakdown in order of severity of punishment is black men, white men, black women, white women. If you commit a crime, you are much better off if you are a woman regarding the length of your sentence. And often the focus of women perpetrators is mitigating factors. Sufferage is suffused with hypocrisy. Women were given the vote, while men had to earn it. There was no attempt to take the consumate responsibility that goes along with the priviliege of the vote. It's arguable that people decide things emotionally first, and then rationalize their decisions afterwards with fact and logic. Not always, but very often. I agree as well, but I see a problem in those who do insist on making it a left/right issue. Like Bernard Chapin. Me, I hate both the left and the right. >:)

You know, this is the problem with a website copying another website. One has to go woozle hunting. So, in this case, yes, the issue doesn't seem to be that the woman won't be prosecuted, but that crime is not going into the stats as a rape. So it's a case of erasing male victims and female perpetrators.

Exactly. Elam's writings are the low hanging fruit, because he intentionally sets out to provoke a reaction. But it's the ideas themselves that they object to, not the presentation. In their eyes, Farrell is just as much of a monster. And they'll roast you for bringing up him as some kind of example of a moderate.

I hate to keep beating this drum, but my first exposure to anti-MRA propoganda was manboobz calling Farrell an incest supporting rape apologist, based on things Warren Farrell has actually written.

Paul Elam opened an LLC so AVFM could sell tee shirts! He's only in it for the mad, undreamt of profits that selling tee shirts can garner!

I just did a quick google. According to wiki it's called Belief disconfirmation paradigm.

To go against something they've made a "part" of their selves. This is why smokers (I am one) get indignant in the face of good arguments against smoking, for example. I propose we call it the Charles Clymer effect.

The writer actually talked to MRAs. That puts it miles beyond most articles that just cite Manboobz and call it a day. The last few paragraphs honked me off. "Ah, MRAs you shoot yourselves in the foot with your anger. Stop blaming feminism, just go back to sleep..."

You're going to have to do better than a link to wikipedia to support your statement that feminism is "a movement focused on creating equality for women".

I had to wade into Manboobz for this link. I hope showering with lye will get the stench off. http://wehuntedthemammoth.com/2012/11/21/what-mens-rights-guru-warren-farrell-actually-said-about-the-allegedly-positive-aspects-of-incest-note-its-even-more-repugnant-than-that-sounds/ You can be the most mild mannered, reasonable dude, and they will still tar and feather you as a raping, child molesting, baby eating monster. I'm going to put this as plain as I can: Being an MRA (or MRA friendly) is th…

One of the biggest hurdles is the tendency for men to be repulsed by any kind of "attack" on a woman. Even if it's an article on a webpage. So other men, (I am assuming you are male, correct me if I'm wrong) get a visceral, negative gut reaction unless a protest is done in the most genteel, polite and civilized way. And that just does not cut it. Because feminists know this, and use women as emotional human shields. Warren Farrell has been talking about this shit for decades, and no one listened…

It's impossible because feminism is founded on fear and hatred of men.

Reduce the incidence of single motherhood by providing incentives for parents with children to stick together. A public awareness campaign about the transition to adulthood for young men, including a specific focus on realistic expectations out of women and relationships. (No, you are not likely to get a supermodel girlfriend, and why would you want one for a relationship based only on her looks?) And that men should not base their self-worth on the approval of women.

It did seem to come from a bedrock anaylsis of feminism that doesn't presuppose any previous investigation into men's rights. That makes it very accessible to a noob. It was the second video of yours I watched after the one addressing the atheist community.

Typhon's video on the Janissaries managed to put the phenomenon of "willing slavery" into proper perspective for me. I consider her ideas to be damn near necessary to understanding gender conflict.

I've tried to scrub the concept of "Not all man", "reverse sexism" from my vocabulary. Men aren't like that. And it's just plain sexism. There's no need for qualifiers.

It's talking points restated to look a certain way. Most of that stuff has been said in regards to the wage gap, gender parity in occupations, etc, etc. If, as Warren Farrell said (paraphrasing) women make different choices in occupation that lead to earning less money, are they "inferior" to men who earn more? Or are they "superior" in prioritizing their personal life over burning out on a job in order to get hard cash, because society likes Men with lots of money? A person can spin that to say…

So frustrating. All the feminist shaming and deflections and DARVO came out in that video. If MRAs interrupted feminist talks with bullhorns, drums and shouting, they'd be roasted alive, and while I'd get some schadenfreude out of such a disruption, I don't want it to happen. I want feminists to be able to say whatever they like, just as I want MRAs to be able to do the same.

I see some SJW's backpedalling and using the term kyriarchy. Which is an amusing way of saying the absurdly obvious. People with power have a tendency to exploit those beneath them. I see it as a small, pathetic, but at least forward step out of feminist madness.

If I have to respond to this kind of thing, I prefer to say "Men are not like that". A Man may be like that, but then A Woman may be awful for some reason as well. Men, in general, are not like that, and so the "Not all" is an unnecessary qualifier.

"Central to the political agenda of MRAs is floating the idea that men somehow have a “right” to an abortion, or more accurately a right to interfere with a woman’s right to an abortion" Central? This article writer didn't even dip a toe into men's rights issues. What a maroon.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
