My point in sharing that was that female circumcision (like male circumcision) occurs any many different countries and parents have different reasons for doing it. I understand if you watch a sensationalized documentary, it’ll say “They do it to CONTROL women’s sexuality!!” But if you read an actual anthropological paper on the subject, they will give very different reasons for why it is done. 7	Attitudes about Male Genital Mutilation from recent conversations I've had. Wow, I’m sorry you feel so attacked by my question. This is a problem I see a lot on the pro-circumcision side: people saying things that are obviously not true that go uncorrected. Obviously, cutting a woman’s clitoris and cutting a man’s glans are not the same thing but pro-circ people are comfortable making blatantly incorrect statements like that. 1	Something Happened to a Woman? Nearest Man Must be Guilty! I was just saying that women have legal protections that men don’t. All of this is to say that if a woman mysteriously disappears, our first instinct shouldn’t be to lock up the last man she saw, especially when there were no eye-witness reports of violence between the two and the man has no criminal history. When you consider the fatality rates (close to zero) of UTIs and most STD’s, the benefits of circumcision are very weak. The AAP also acknowledges that you would have to circumcise 100 boys to prevent 1 UTI. Circumcision drastically reduces sensitivity of the penis and alters sexual function, so it’s not something we should do unless it’s 100% medically necessary.
