Let the programs guide you. Most have a 5 rep 5 set scheme (or something similar) for strength gains.

Most (nearly all) personal trainers are an awful choice for anyone who is looking to do more than just "exercise" with a rent a friend at the gym. The few good ones that know how to train the big barbell lifts are a rare and precious thing if you find one. If your PT is throwing random exercises at you or is obsessed with stability balls or functional training, run away. I'd recommend picking up Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe. There you can learn all about the correct form for the big lifts …
