The courts shift dollars to keep things basically at status quo. Most (all?) seemed to do this after the 2018 tax changes. Here' an analogy. Local districts made restaurant service fees illegal. So the salmon went up a couple of bucks. Same thing. Overall, alimony is evil.

Lines up with everything I understand. A few more things to consider: The QDRO process should allow Fidelity, Schwabb, etc to split the shares into two accounts without invoking taxes or early withdrawal penalties. Her share will go into an IRA. If she ops for a lump sum, a stupid thing to do, she'll owe both penalties and taxes. Either way, you should be safe. She can use your social security benefits if they exceed her own social security benefits. This doesn't affect you. Details. Talk to you…

My divorce took longer and cost more than I'd ever imagine. Check your state. In California, community property ends at date of separation. Technically, anything she spends at that point is her debt. But that's messy in terms of paperwork. It's much cleaner to close all accounts and open individual ones. Build a lot of plans within plans. Try to get as many parachutes as possible. You may not use half of them. But it's better to know what's available ahead of time. Start figuring out if you have…

Integrity? In marriage??? Engagement: What can you promise me? Marriage: What are you delivering to me? Divorce: What can I take? Open your hands, let me see what's in them. You won't find integrity in marriage without a ton of change. Once you get rid of servitude, do away with alimony, do away with this asymmetrical responsibility of "fulfillment" ... then you'll start to see integrity in women. Road map: Equal pay (getting there!). Individual wealth based on merit (no progress). No alimony (n…

I didn't have to worry with that. She wanted the divorce. I doubt she'll ever reverse course. In fact, I betted on it. I bought out of alimony. I am done. Done done. We have no need to speak ever again. I feel like I'm "that guy" ... the one who took the next flight just because he had a funny feeling the plane was going to crash.

CA requires 2 months worth of statements for every account, checking, savings, Petsmart, Macy's, everything. I'm surprised NJ doesn't do the same. If she's paid in cash ... yeah, probably nothing to be done. I would take that deal in a heartbeat myself. But I have no idea what your brother makes or if NJ has alimony calculators.

Max gift for 2024 is $18000. Taxes and audit blips kick in afterwards. I don't know if banks are required to report things like large transfers to the IRS. But I'd imagine you'd leave a very loud and easily discovered paper trail at $150k. Her loan to her sister probably slipped under the table. I don't know if you can expect the same during a divorce. Depending on how you handle it, you're possibly going to incur taxes and/or penalties, especially if it goes into a retirement account or 529. I'…
