My honours project found stark differences between males and females on the child development census - which is conducted on 5-6 year olds. Especially for social skills and emotional maturity, males are nearly 2x as likely to score in the bottom 10% of the population. As a mother of both sexes, it didn’t sit right with me that this wasn’t commonly known, and something being done. All I saw was scholarships offered for more women in STEM, awards for female researchers. What message does that send…

My research is focused on child development based on the Australian Child Development Census. This is conducted every 3 years (since 2009) by the child’s teacher after roughly 6months of the first year of full time schooling. The survey is 98 questions covering physical, social, emotional, cognitive and language development. I’m a PhD student investigating the consequences of child abuse and neglect using population level data. Males are doing worse on every outcome we have looked at (divided by sex assigned at birth). When there is child abuse and/or neglect, the outcomes are worse for males, even when we compare statistically similar females. I’m appalled at the lack of outrage and attention this has garnered from my state and federal government.
