I don't really think that way of thinking of masculinity is valid, as it contradicts the standard definition, and is just a fancy way of renaming gender roles. I mean, I get why we want this to be the case, but we should absolutely be able to think about and discuss the roles that we very much still contend with. Breaking down barriers and letting people be whatever the hell they want to be is totally awesome and they should do that, but as long as gender roles do exist we should be able to disc…

How about you write your question or criticism of my post directly, rather than asking me to redefine the terms that I spent four paragraphs exploring? I don't need to define toxic masculinity for you a second time; I establish exactly what I'm talking about in my first paragraph. If you don't like that paragraph, I'd invite you to refer to any of the top level comments in this thread, which I am agreeing with. This one in particular is terrific. What is Healthy Masculinity? Literally in my post…

I think that it's a term that had its time and place. There are some aspects of male gender roles that are/were toxic. Stuff like, "don't be a pussy", don't do XYZ because it's "gay", and there are distinct type of masculine rudeness in most of our cultures such as catcalling. It was useful to be able to describe those things for a while and to point them out as the inherently toxic things that they are and to look at how it uniquely effects men. But that time has come and gone and I'd be very h…

The word "tragedy". It's absolutely fucking tragic how alienated these young men are becoming, and how much they are suffering. I never counted myself an incel but I was close for a few years. I remember spending an afternoon looking for it on Reddit one day, but I was one of the lucky ones and managed to pull myself out of the downward spiral that I was on. I remember choking back tears as I asked my sister what was wrong with me. The tragedy is that "incels" are human beings and they are suffe…

My best friend is sensitive, depressed, and nonbinary. They are also polyamorous and spent a few years with three girlfriends. Assuming the preferences of women as a group is a mistake. And if you're like most of my chronically single friends, they are genuine and wonderful dudes who will find their match someday. Your description of yourself could easily be a friend of mine being down on himself, he's never even been on a date in the six years I've known him, but the light of human kindness shi…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
