You're reading more into the New Testament account than is in the actual text, which never says anything about Joseph thinking his wife broke her prior vow of virginity and got "knocked up." As the description in the story states, Joseph was "a just man;" however, if he was refusing to submit to the law you cite while thinking it applicable, then that description would've been inapt.
