They'll justify the shit out of it and gaslight you, but they have to know what they're doing is wrong. I dated an abuser who would apologize one second then yell at me for "making" him angry the next. What does need to be said is that those scenes in movies where a girl meets a guy at a bar, he says something offensive, then she slaps him; that's not ok.
