I suspect the problem isn’t really about getting married though. I can’t believe the men who complain about flagging marriage rates are keen on being a provider or working to maintain a cooperative relationship. I’d bet it’s more due to their own status—they see successful men who have wives and they want the same for themselves so they can be high-status too. It has nothing to do with the relationship itself.

And, on top of that, the idea that anyone could get by with less is treated as insanity. My wife and I entered our marriage with three sets of dishes, mine, hers and hers. Every time we would walk through a department store, she’d ask me about my feelings on a new set of dishware. Eventually it became questions about when I would “allow” her to buy a new set of dishes. I always maintained that although we did not need new dishes, I would not stop her from making the purchase. I could never make …

Therapy is for helping you understand your problem. If you haven’t figured out a solution for your problem, you need to understand it better. One good way to more completely understand something is to try to explain it to someone else. Like, if you take a class on some subject, you will learn about the subject. But to really get a full understanding, try to teach a class on the subject. The questions your students ask will make you think really hard, and push your limits of comprehension. A good…

I mean, I’m a man, and I was married to a woman. My dad is also a man, married to a woman. My mother was mostly a SAHM, and took care of us, took care of the household, managed the money, and was very active in the community. Dad was the breadwinner, and would begrudgingly do a few chores, but left most of the work to mom. When I became a SAHD, I did all the same things my mother did and he said to me, “she [your wife] treats you like a slave”. That’s pretty misogynistic. I don’t think being mar…

This isn’t just a feminist problem. It’s a capitalist problem too. Maybe a whole-world problem: If we are going to share, then some losers are going to be rewarded. Most people just can’t stomach that.

"By all means marry"; if you get a good wife, you'll be happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher" —Socrates

We average about twice every other week. Late 40s, both divorced, managing two households with young children. You will either make the compromise or leave. Either way, it’s not a big deal. Any relationship can end at any time for any reason. Otherwise, we get trapped in unsatisfying relationships for years at a time, which is far worse than running through a lot of partners in a short time.

One thing always left out of these arguments is the utility of “getting by with less”. One of the major sources of conflict with my ex-wife was due to her usually trying to expand, acquire and complexify, while I was trying to reduce, consolidate, and simplify: We don’t have to keep track of as much when there’s less to keep track of. But what she wanted was for someone to be on-board with her goals, working with her (or, more darkly, for her) to accomplish what she would put her mind to. Campin…

Have you tried dating women who are unconventionally attractive or needy? Once I gave up the idea that I had to date a very attractive or desirable woman, the world opened up to me.

Women want emotionally available men the same way I want to know the price of a car before I decide to buy it.

He is four years old now. I class these thoughts with the same kind of thoughts as “jump over the edge” when I’m on a cliff or “drive into the cornfield” on the road. There’s no intention in the thought, it’s just an automatic comparison between the current state of things and one possible awful future. My son was about three when he noticed there was a difference between his penis and my own, and he was aghast when I told him my foreskin had been cut off. He was reassured when I told him that h…

I’m circumcised; my father was too. I did not have my son circumcised, because it seems cruel to do, regardless of potential effects. I resent Kellogg for promoting anti-masturbation hysteria, and I imagine jerking off now would be a little more comfortable with a foreskin. However, I do experience a kind of l'appel du vide to cut it off when I see my sons foreskin. Crazy intrusive thoughts.

No. The right thing to do is to dispense with the “Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy,” and “for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health” rhetoric, and start saying that we must each make ourselves worthy of romantic love, improving, striving, perfecting ourselves both for our own benefit and those we would have love us romantically.

Yeah, most of these posts are in the vein of something I’ve only recently begun to understand: outside of on-line dating, dating someone is the tip of a whole iceberg of social interactions. It’s not even a straightforward as maybe finding someone dateable at regular meetings of your club. You join clubs and do social activities to build a network. You’ll find people in that network attractive, and some of them will find you attractive too, and you might make a connection with one or a few of th…

Your description of the problem is a little like a garden path—I keep following you until I get consternated, then go back to the top and start again. From what you’ve written I get this: 1.) you are, and believe yourself to be, high-value. 2.) about once a year you meet a high-value man and hit it off. He pursues you. 3.) you are really taken with him, and fall in love. 4.) he stops pursuing you. 5.) the relationship falls apart. (You don’t say who initiates the breakup) I’m pretty sure this is…

This only works if desires are first-person, singular, short-term and proximate, but I think we’re all more complex than that. Desires can be second-person: I want you to want this. They can be plural: I want this repeatedly but not once. They can be long-term: I want the effects of continual action. They can be distant: I’ll want to have this next year. It’s totally valid to say, “I want someone who will want to go to the beach with me in late summer every year,” but that’s really hard to get o…

This really resonated with me. I’m a man, and I really don’t like my sex drive. I want to be able to meet people, and while intellectually acknowledging their attractiveness, not fall all over myself in trying to figure out if “there’s a chance.” I want to enjoy human contact, and touch, and even make out without the little motor in the back of my mind pushing pushing pushing towards sex. I want out; I wish I could turn it off, and I’ve kinda realized that MtF hormone replacement therapy might b…

think men are more likely to regard the “rules” as applicable to everyone, all the time, and this feeling of being “lied” to comes from the aStOnIsHiNg realization that people don’t generally follow the “rules” to their own disadvantage. I suspect women are keenly aware of this, in part because of the subtle inclusion and exclusion games adolescent girls play. Boys just don’t do that, and a lot of the more guileless ones go many, many years following “the rules” to no ill effect, and probably co…
