If social situations really are difficult for you, for now lifting and having a good style will give you the most bang for your buck, with lifting giving far more bang. Read through the side bar. Until you've done that, there's really no need for this thread.

The program includes diet recommendations. Which you don't have to take. There's no chapter in the book titled "Getting Six Pack Abs" or anything like that. The diet recommendations are for getting as strong as possible as quickly as possible without regard for body composition goals. Rippetoe does acknowledge people having other goals, even if he doesn't approve of them. Anyways, a certain diet isn't the crux of the program, and the same diet recommendations would apply to PHAT. carbs are the predominant factor in what makes you fat, no debate. How does this statement apply if you consume nothing but 800 calories of pure sugar every day? How about if you consume 10,000 calories a day with no carbs? Would expect fat gain/retention with the former and little to no fat gain with the latter?

The value of increasing volume over time is actually to determine that your max strength is increasing, and when max strength goes up, all manners of good things happen. In regards to the OPs explanation of "volume", pragmatically, you should think of volume as a sort of score that relates to your max strength. With this in mind, 8 sets of 4 would have a lower "score" than 4 sets of 8 for the same weight. This would be due to the fact that 4 sets of 8 are more difficult to perform than 8 sets of…
