The best thing with these payment systems is that they only rely on a mobile coverage, which in most places are pretty much anywhere except the deep wilds. This solved the cash-handling issue for pretty much all medium and small vendors. I haven't used an ATM for years except for very specific reasons, like giving cash as an present.

I really do not understand how people can blame the tourists. You simply do not go around and accuse people for stuff without being certain, no matter how noble you think the cause is. In many countries that would count as illegal slander with legal repercussions. But these morons though they had all the right in the world to do what they did. So here we have entitled tourists breaking the local law, why should they not be thrown into jail for at least a couple of hours to ponder their stupidity…
