But is it about her or about the kids? If she had a bad reaction to OP dating, does he really want to put the kids in the uncomfortable position of being the bearer of this particular news or would it be better to tell her himself to save the kids that burden?

Divorce attorney here- definitely tell her and your text is perfect. While I agree that your ex-wife does not get an opinion on your marital status, you are doing this for your kids, not for her. Your kids are pretty young. If your ex-wife has a bad reaction to the news, you want her to have it privately- not in front of your kids.
