To the extent this can be tested, history says the opposite is true. At least in Europe, queens were 27% more likely to go to war than kings. No doubt some would argue this is still men's fault, that they see a weak monarch and attack or that queen needs to prove she is tough as any man and so goes to war, but if that's your argument, the conditions are the same today. No reason to think that having a female leader would not lead to war still. https://qz.com/967895/throughout-history-women-ruler…

I am sorry to hear that brother. I think the article does a surprisingly good job of talking about how common your experiences and feelings are for new fathers. It may be slow, but I do think it is getting better recognized though. Certainly among my father friends, they all seem to be aware of the issue. More evidence of just how much more the newer generations of fathers are involved in and care about raising their kids. I hope you are doing better. Sending love to you and your family.

And since we live in a patriarchy, there is no systemic or institutionalized misandry And here you can already see her ignorance(?)/bad faith(?)/Schrodinger's feminism garbage. I am sure, if she was in a better mood, she would say "The patriarchy hurts men, too!" But any definition of "patriarchy" will note that (to pull from Wikipedia) it is a "social system" or (to pull from the OED) "a system of society or government." But this mod, can say with a straight face, that a social or government sy…

Not to dismiss you, but this is not new. Like so many issues, the internet just keeps rediscovering it. To me, it just shows how entrenched and *systemic* misandry is that rich women can, for 30+ years, use infant foreskins to stay looking young, and it still thought of, at most, a joke (per the article, the doctor only says ("Initially, there was a misunderstanding and people thought we were actually grinding up the foreskin," he told the San Diego CityBeat in 2010. "So, there was a lot of snic…

Good work. Be the change you want to see and all that. If they continue to push back, you can tell them that the Lemkin Center for the Prevention of Genocide (named after the man who coined the term "genocide") recognizes androcide as a stage in genocide. They recently identified Tigray/Ethiopia as a potential genocide case because of the "overt undertones of androcide." https://www.lemkininstitute.com/active-genocide-alert-1/active-genocide-alert---ethiopia-in-tigray Note that Amnesty's work is…

I understand not wanting to doxx this person and that your main point is about the male loneliness epidemic, but this is nothing short of genocide denial from a person with, ironically, a Palestinian flag in their bio. Genocide can take different forms. In some cases, the perpetrators will target everyone (man, woman, child) in a group for killing. Think the Holocaust and its gas chambers, or the Rwandan genocide. In other cases, the men (really, any male that poses a physical threat) are killed…

Yes, I may have lept to conclusions a bit. A temporary suspension of both parties after an accusation is standard, and I can understand if this man does not want further publicity. But you don't see any outrage on his behalf like you see with these articles, and I suspect he did not get any official apology from DoorDash (if, in fact, his account was reinstated). Yes, this is all vibes, and I don't have concrete evidence. But I still suspect DoorDash still does not view him 100% as a victim. htt…

Understandable that she did not discuss further, but DoorDash suspended the man/customer's account even though he was the victim of a crime (felony, possibly classified as a sex crime). Unclear if DoorDash reinstated it and/or apologized. I suspect this is another example of not taking seriously male victims of sex crimes committed by women.

Oh, to be clear, I am also very much against calling someone a "loser" because, as you note, it plays into a capitalist framework that attributes all setbacks in life to personal failure as well as defines "winning" and "losing" based on values that I often don't share. But I also think it's a gendered insult that needs to go.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates08/01/26 04:09 PM
7

Respectfully, TLDR, but I go further and don't even call people "losers" anymore because I realized 1) it is a gendered insult (it is extremely rare that I ever hear a woman called a "loser") 2) often is used to objectify women as prizes you win if you aren't a loser. So I would encourage you and other women to stop calling men losers. You are only participating in your own objectification. Find another insult.

I agree that basically all will require ear protection. That’s my point. The ear protection isn’t protecting your brain, and as this article notes, the shock waves from gunfire can cause brain damage long term. I strongly suspect that we will eventually learn that if repeated exposure to loud noises can cause hearing loss, it can also cause CTE. Certainly we are already seeing this with tankers and artillery men. My broader point is that a small percentage of men are responsible for most violent…

I’m from Texas. I have been to many, many gun ranges. And if you don’t wear ear protection, you will get hearing loss even firing outdoors.

If you think this is just a problem for indoor ranges, I have a bridge to sell you. Ultimately, I would not be surprised that if repeated exposure can cause hearing loss, it is likely it is causing brain damage, too.

I said "mostly" and the WW2 reference is a time cutoff, not a participation cutoff. Post-WW2 saw massive changes in technology (mass media especially) and a host of new countries, many of which wanted to establish a national identity. All of which helped lead to mass culture that is allegedly based in history and tradition, but which is *mostly* not. Feel free to substitute "soccer" for "American football." It won't change much as far as brain trauma (still plenty of heading the ball). I am happ…

Low effort, but I'll respond. Assuming you mean my statement "One of my personal beliefs is that "culture" and "tradition" are mostly post-WW2 constructs with no real basis in actual history." In which case, my belief is based on examples such as the United States adding "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance in the 1950s (because of Communists) or Southern states adding the Confederate Battle Flag to their state flags around the same time (because of civil rights). Or, for non-American example…

Just to note, that even within Phase 1 of the hostage exchange, women were prioritized, with even female soldiers being released before elderly or injured men. That men would be victimized by any "snags" in negotiations was imminently predictable even if not part of the plan (although I agree with OP that it was part of the plan): https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/report-says-living-hostages-will-be-first-to-released-in-deals-first-phase/ ("of the 33 hostages to be freed in the first,…

Jumping in to note that a man was killed (an Indian man in fact) but that the headline does not mention it. One of the results of making men's deaths "background noise" not worth highlighting is that only one side of the scale has weight on it. We read a story and only take away that all Indian men are misogynist rapists and not that some are willing to lose their lives trying to protect female strangers.

Misandry as cover for anti-Indian racism ("I'm not racist, they just come from a very patriarchal culture") is explicitly mentioned in the Mission Statement of this sub as a reason for it was created (and to distinguish it from MensLib).

Here is the release schedule: Detailing unconfirmed elements of the deal, Channel 12 reports that of the 33 hostages to be freed in the first, 42-day phase of the deal, those to be released will be female civilians, then female soldiers, then men who are over 50, and men who are infirm. I believe that this is the complete release schedule for phase one of the ceasefire. They aren’t saying the sub is too small, they are saying there aren’t enough mods to do the job. But that’s still an indictment of Reddit and our economy at large: either work for free for millionaires (billionaires?) or it’s your own fault because you don’t want badly enough. I will note that it is far from clear that women actually attempt suicide more often than men. Much of the data is self-reported and, to the extent it isn’t, male suicide attempts are more likely to have plausible deniability. Show up to an ER with a stomach full of pills and it’s marked a suicide attempt, but if you get shit-faced and drive your car into a wall, it might just be an accident. ***Edited for typo

Sorry for yet another article on gender political differences, but thought this article was very interesting, particularly in looking at specific non-social issues as well as proscribing possible solutions for Democrats.

Prior to the 1960s, men were more likely to vote Democratic than women, and it wasn't really until 1980 that (white) men were reliably (slightly) more likely to vote Republican than women. I am not a social scientist, so I don't know how you would isolate these variables, but I also wonder about the urban vs. rural divide. Urban areas are generally more Democratic, racially diverse, and female while rural areas more Republican, white, and male, but maybe it is that living in a rural area makes y…

1) my understanding of this sub is that it prefers not to have dating/relationship posts. Would welcome clarification on this point 2) Once again, we can see how MensLib is actually quite conservative in its outlook on gender relations, to the point that it is borderline patriarchal oppression itself. While the poster's first reason for wanting to start a group is for "coping with" the stigma of male relationship struggles, much of his post and the comments is devoted to wanting to help women (p…

Just as a side note, I hate that the term "emotional labor" has lost its original meaning and its distinction from "emotional work." IMHO, it is part of how the capitalist oppressors are trying to distract us with the gender wars. The sociologist Arlie Hochschild provided the first definition of emotional labor, which is displaying certain emotions to meet the requirements of a job. The related term emotion work (also called "emotion management") refers to displaying certain emotions for persona…

I guess I could have made this clearer, but this isn't really an I/P issue, it is a lack of empathy towards men issue. Most of the reports I cited specifically state that Israeli men were victims of sexual violence on October 7th ("However, the Commission documented cases indicative of sexual violence perpetrated against women and men in and around the Nova festival site, as well as the Nahal Oz military outpost and several kibbutzim."). Ha! I also was also working on a reply. But for what it's worth: 1) I have my doubts a dog raped someone, but I do believe that given what appears to be common Israeli practice of stripping male detainees naked and clear evidence of dog attacks on detainees, that it is believable that a dog started humping a naked prisoner and the guards laughed and did nothing. 2) this is beside my point. Devil's Advocate: 1) MensLib wants to encourage discussions and they try to do this by mostly only allowing article links as main posts. They are the opposite to LWMA in that, here, it's mostly posters just sharing their own thoughts. If you had an article to use as a jumping off point for your own thoughts (in a comment), you would have better chances. 2) The mods are overworked and so don't any real effort to reviewing the substance of comments. This is my biggest issue with the mods' behavior: it's one thing if it was a sub on Warhammer or a random music genre. You abuse your power to permaban someone (and the mods are also often actually borderline abusive in how they even talk to people), I don't think that pushes the banned user into right wing thought. But the MensLib mods' behavior is going to push boys and men into right wing thought. Counterproductive is putting it mildly.

My two cents as someone who joined MensLib almost from the beginning (prior to the Vox article, when it had less than 2,000 members), but who has now been permabanned: 1) There is extreme hostility towards opposing viewpoints. Whereas posting in both r/MRA and r/MensLib used to be allowed (if not encouraged) in effort to "convert" MRAs to MensLib (even Delta Baryon would do so, and you can find comments of his from 2015 saying so), the mods now explicitly use your posting history as a factor in …

To this point, I would be hard-pressed to find a better example of the Left doing this than what I discussed in a previous post. Medical science has, for decades, said post-partum depression in men in a serious issue, and yet on an article about it, the top voted comment on that other sub is saying men are taking away from women's issues by calling it that. Yeah, I found it refreshing that the article did not explicitly blame this on men policing other men's emotional expressions. Certainly in my adult life, it has been women much more than men who have dismissed or shut down my feelings. And yes, the manosphere can be toxic, but everything the author condemns can be found in female and feminist spaces, too. Non-paywall, pt 2: As one 20-year-old put it, “If a man voices any concern, they get deflected with all of their so-called privileges.” He added: “They’d be like, ‘Whatever. Women have suffered more than you, so you have no right to complain.’” Almost without exception, the boys I talked to craved closer, more emotionally open relationships, but had neither the skills nor the social permission to change the story. Non-paywall: The 20-year-old college student and gamer I met in Cedar City, Utah, didn’t seem particularly amused by his own joke that he was a cultural cliché. He lived in his grandma’s basement, and barely left the house except to go to classes. I also found it fascinating, and something that I have noticed in a lot of subs. Like MensLib used to encourage cross posting between it and MRA subs as part of the dialogue (even delta_baryon would post in them). Now the mods explicitly use any history of posting in MRA subs as grounds to ban you from MensLib, even if your comments were arguing against those in the subs. Yeah, "without judgement" was probably the wrong choice of words. I also could have been clearer because, as you note, I also agree that the validation of the venting can be very harmful if it is steering people in the wrong direction, letting negative thoughts and emotions curdle into hate. I just sort of assumed the positive influence. But my point is just that you have to take people as they come, especially if they are hurt or broken. [S]ociety wants men and boys to cut off emotions that don't benefit society and in a large extension, women themselves. Thereby the idea that men need to be "more in touch with their emotions" and "vulnerable" can only truly happen when society stops expecting men to withhold emotions that reflect negatively on women Yep. And this is one of bell hooks' points: that many women, despite claiming they want this, are not ready to hear men's pain, particularly when it is inflicted by women. This is p…

So basically, this quote tells men that their feelings are not important and society does not care about their feelings because women are afraid they will kill them. I imagine this take may not be popular here, but I view the idiom as patriarchal oppression itself. Sorry for the paywall, but interesting article in light of the recent discussions on Gen Z men and women diverging politically. Also perhaps related to LMWA's recent discussion on what makes it "left wing" and Roe v. Wade/abortion rights. Fun(/s) fact: The United States Bureau of Prisons uses a point system to assign inmates to low/medium/high security prisons. You get points for things like previous incarceration, having committed a violent crime, escape attempts etc. The BOP goes through the checklist, totals up your score, and then that determines what kind of prison you go to. All very fair enough. Particularly agree with the "no true scotsman" analogy as I commented below. Fair enough. I guess I would say that bell hooks at least does denounce that bigotry and argues that the failure by the feminist movement as whole to do not only damages the movement but is also not feminism. But yeah, there is an element of "no true Scotsman" to the feminist movement that often ends up as gaslighting. On the other hand, you could also say "Why should I change my name? They're the ones that suck."

To be fair, there aren't exactly a lot of theorists they could tout. Even books like Self Made Man, Boys and Sex, and Of Boys and Men aren't really theory books.

One more quote, both because I like bell hooks and because I've reading more r/AskMen and suspect this quote would resonate with a lot of others: “To heal, men must learn to feel again [ed: one complaint I have is that hooks really leans into the "men need to feel" stuff and these first two sentences are a little victim-blamey]. They must learn to break the silence, to speak the pain. Often men, to speak the pain, first turn to the women in their lives and are refused a hearing. In many ways wom…

So, I'm going to defend bell hooks a bit. I know that is controversial here, and I appreciate that the mods still allow opposing viewpoints to be aired rather than delete and ban anyone that strays from orthodoxy. First though, let me state that I agree bell hooks's isn't perfect. For starters, even within a single work (let alone a career), she will cover A LOT of ground which in turn means that you are definitely not going to agree with all of it (she is going to contradict herself at times as…

Not so much a discussion item but an action item. Rape should not be accepted as part of the price you pay for committing a crime, and the fact that it is so breezily assumed (and joked about) is yet another indictment of the carceral state. The linked organization works to end sexual assaults in prisons. While not specifically a male issue, men makeup over 93% of the prison population in the United States, so this issue impacts men disproportionately, especially BIPOC and LGBT men. As we enter …

Fair enough question. First, I don't agree with anyone on everything. That Jezebel at times directly contradicted my egalitarian values does not mean I didn't find value in it at other times (same goes for here). And to be clear, I found Jezebel to be more problematic more often than the other Gawker sites. I will also note that the FDS and TwoX subreddits were not fans (so enemy of my enemy is my friend?). https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoXChromosomes/comments/u1x3g/dae_dislike_jezebelcom/ https://w…

I have a feeling that most commenters here hated Jezebel, but I am still sad to see it go, especially because it appears to be a victim of private equity vultures. I had my disagreements with the Jezebel writers over the years, but they were still leftists and I agree with many things (I am pro legal abortion because I am pro abortion in general). The true enemy is still the capitalist pigs who seek to divide us so they might profit. But that being said, I also appreciated it for giving me a gli…

I found myself wondering the same thing recently now that I am acutely aware of how bigoted and toxic MensLib has become. Maybe it's just me being old, but back the heyday of blogging, it really felt like there were conversations and communities to be found. Places like No, Seriously, What About the Menz, Heteronormative Patriarchy, Feminist Critics, and others discussed men's issues from a leftist perspective. Perhaps even more importantly, while the internet has always had a trolling problem a…

Sorry, forgot to add a top-level comment. As we get close to Halloween, I thought the community might find this article interesting. Witches are strongly associated with women in western Europe (although I wish we would talk about warlocks more), but in Russia, witchcraft was identified with men. This article examines male witches in pre-revolutionary Russia and how their witchcraft fit into the strict class hierarchies of Czarist Russia.

Best of luck to you. I know not everyone has the time or interest in reading a 60 page scholarly article (still better sources than the Daily Mail), but you might find the Oxford summary report and its interviews with subjects helpful. Maybe the section starting on page 40 in particular?

What's the scale? 1 to 10 or is like DEFCON, where 5 is the lowest? Regardless, glad to hear things are getting better. For what it's worth, I, too, resent being forced to do things I would be perfectly happy to do on my own. I would guess that most everyone would, so maybe it's the second option, that some people appreciate the kick in the pants?

Also adding that the impact false accusations can have on mental health used to be something regularly discussed on MensLib. Obviously, you would likely be permabanned if you did so now, but in the interests of defending feminism and male feminism specifically, it didn't always used to be this way. https://www.reddit.com/r/MensLib/comments/4cjqu1/i_was_falsely_accused_of_rape_and_im_having/ https://www.reddit.com/r/MensLib/comments/3qq2q4/i\_was\_falsely\_accused\_of\_nonconsensual\_sex\_three/

A few thoughts amigo. First, if you have been the victim of a false accusation, it is not simply that it is perfectly natural to feel violated (it is of course), but is something that can cause serious long-term personality changes, including PTSD. While this study examines false accusations in a general criminal sense (all crimes, not just sex crimes, and not public shaming), I think some of the feelings the men describe could help you "be seen" as the kids say: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi…

While June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, tomorrow (October 10th) is World Mental Health Day, and I thought it would be a good reminder that, even if you aren't experiencing any issues, a friend might be and you don't need an excuse just to chat.

For what it's worth, PPD tends to arise a little later in men, sometimes a year or more after birth. If you are still experiencing symptoms, there is no shame is reaching out to a doctor or therapist to discuss. You also might find this helpful in distinguishing between PPD and the very typical "baby blues": https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/9312-postpartum-depression
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates07/10/23 12:28 PM

Yeah, there is some movement away from calling it "postpartum" depression for that very reason, to call it "peripartum" depression to try and make it clear that the symptoms can start appearing before birth. Also, I suspect, to try and make it clearer that PPD isn't necessarily about the physical and hormonal extreme that is giving birth, but is connected to other issues.

And the fact the top comment appears to be from a woman, in a male feminist space, telling men their mental health issues aren't real and they need to stop being so dramatic is...just...chef's kiss.

Postpartum depression in men isn't so much a research issue. It's that me saying "New dads! You can get postpartum depression too!" shouldn't be met with either a "Yes, but: Men DO NOT get postpartum depression because they aren’t postpartum." (literal top comment at MensLib)* or a "But it's not going to get a lot of research or attention for one glaring reason." Everything is just blaming men or women for it or arguing over who has it worse when it comes to gender issues these days. Just kinda …

I do not think they intentionally meant to be anti-immigrant, but I do think they have demonstrated gullibility with respect to anti-immigrant stereotypes and that led to them to assume an argument (even to disagree with it) that is anti-immigrant. As I read the OP's argument, it is that it is morally and ethically wrong to discriminate against male refugees; however, it is hyperrational to do so because men statistically commit more crime. Therefore, how do we deal with these hyperrational but …

Also agree that with any sort of statistic and pretty much all social science, you can quibble with the definitions used and how the data is interpreted. And certainly incarceration rates does not necessarily prove criminality rates. But still a useful measure, and perhaps the best you can realistically find. I did find it interesting that, as you note, that incarceration rates seem to increase the longer an immigrant is in their host country. Since the stats don't distinguish between legal and …

It seems to be filled with benevolent sexism like women are good/pure and men are evil. Agree with this (although I wouldn't say filled). Everything else I disagree with, respectfully. Also not sure how your position on leftist/liberal ideology squares with the name of this sub.

Respectfully, you are entitled to your opinion that feminism and men's issues are incompatible and you should have a place to share and discuss it. It's just that it sounds like that sub already exists (mensrights). You are, however, completely right that "feminism" is not the same as "women". Sometimes making progress on men's issues requires criticism of women's choices and behaviors, but that is not the same as criticism of feminism. Sadly, I think /r/menslib has begun to conflate the two.

I agree that OP is pro-immigration. I also came on to here to clarify that the post was ultimately arguing in favor (or discussing - arguing may be too strong of a word) of more empathy to men, especially refugee men. But the OP ultimately still uses the word "hyper-rational" to describe discriminating against men if one zooms out to the abstract view of men are more violent generally. My point is that it is not rational at all. Even if we view things at the level of "all men are potentially vio…

I actually think it is the opposite. It is discriminating against men to excuse racism and xenophobia. Calls less attention that way.

I'm on the left and I don't promote misandry. This sub is left wing and it doesn't promote misandry. And I don't think MensLib supports misandry. Let's not surrender the left like that. I am also a feminist (political theory) and I support feminism (the women's movement). I don't think either are inherently at odds with men's issues. I also believe racism is/can be a men's issue. Unfortunately, sometimes that racism will come from people who are or claim to be feminist. Saying so doesn't make me…
