I can understand that. I've worked in retail and it was too stressful for me as well. But to be more general, have you applied for any job at all? Not trying to be accusing or anything. You made it clear that it's a joke, but approaching people at the gym can be quite tricky. It's not a good idea to have a long conversation with a stranger at the gym. Most people will act like they enjoy talking to you, but really they just want peace to do their workouts. OP didn't do anything wrong though. He simply gave her a compliment. It probably didn't take more than a few seconds, and definitely didn't distract her from her workout.
