Obviously I don't know the whole story, but that sounds very unfortunate. If you were calling for equality, then it sounds like you were upholding the true values of feminism, and I'm sorry you were met with a negative reaction. I hope a few internet squabbles haven't turned you off the idea of equality for all sexes.
