You remember learning about indentured servants in school? That's basically what happened. There was no such thing as race slavery. Slaves were either POWs or someone who owe'd you something. It was a very fair system, essentially saying "I owe you something I'll work it back for you." So it is indeed a misinterpretation. If they do that wrong that means it's not there Word of God therefore they have a false belief.
