Yup, I wouldn't be surprised of the "constant bad mouthing" was more like pointing out when MIL was nasty to the wife, or played favourites with the grandkids. The kind of toxic stuff that the wife can see, but OP grew up with so thinks is normal since he hasn't cut the apron strings.
