I don't think it's necessarily rude, in English, to say "my female co-worker is hates wearing high heels" or "my male co-worker can't grow a full beard" (those are just examples where the sex of the person adds context to the story). But perhaps the reason why it would be weird to say "femelle" in French is because your language already has a clear way of indicating the gender of certain nouns without actually using terms like "male" or "femelle".
