I was at a christening a few years ago and at the party afterwards I was getting a pint at the bar when I suddenly thought it was quiet considering there were at least twenty kids there, most under 10 years old. A good friend of mine got married a while ago, he sulked that the cash gifts he got was nowhere near what he was expecting. He actually made very little contact with his friends for a few months, it was only when covid started he began to talk frequently in the WhatsApp group we're in or calling people. Just refuse it. "I'm not interested and I am perfectly happy in the role I'm in". I turned down several offers of promotion in my last job and a ridiculous offer to stay when I left. I was offered the same again when I met up for drinks a few months after I started in my new place. They sulked for a bit but work moves on quickly. (I left for a new challenge, more basic but earning less in bonuses and far more working from home and flexible hours)
